1985 Maxim X bobber / modifications

Im a newbee to the group and I just picked up a 1985 xj Maxim x for $300., I was really looking at the bobber style mod.,I was thinking bobber style with drag bars and dual pipes oneach side.Any ideas on a rear fender that wouldnt require alot of fab ?Also where would the best place to get the drag bars that would work with my factory controls ? As this is going to be my first real project of this magnatude any help would be welcome. Thanks ahead of time.

 

I'm planning on getting TC bros drag bars. A lot of people repurpose the original rear fender. Just fill the holes and smooth it out before mounting it a bit further up. Not sure if that's the look you're going for, but it's likely what I'll be doing with mine. Good luck!

 

I am going thru the same decisions.I have saw bikes with front fenders mounted on the rear.With a little cutting and grinding i am gonna give it a try.A good investment is a tap and die set.Then you just drill the holes where you want to mount the fender and tap the hole on the frame allowing you to thread a bolt threw it.Its not as hard as it seems.A little ingenuity is what makes custom bikes stand out from the rest.

 

I just did the Front fender to rear fender mod on my 80 xj650 this weekend,very painless.Just plasma cut the old mouting crap off grinded it real nice,then i bent up some flat metal stock to brace underneath the fender,welded it on...and wahla...all done.looks good
