Hello everyone. I just picked up an old 84 Maxim 400 yesterday. At least that is what year I was told the bike is. I figured it would be a great project bike for me to learn engines better, and if I get it running again, also a good bike to learn to ride.

Just thought I'd stop by and say hey, because I'm sure I'll be back with plenty of questions.

If you are in the US it's not an '84. I take it you have no title then either? I know the DOHC 400's like the back of my hand so feel free to PM me as needed with Q's.

Are you from Canada by any chance?

    Welcome.

I've got a 1984 400 Maxim as well however it was produced in April 1983. The production tag is on the font forks. I read somewhere that up here some 83s were held back and released in 84. For parts purposes it's an 83. Yamaha has it listed in their parts catalog as an 83 XS400K

I'm working through mine now. Lots to do. Get to know a good parts guy. I've replaced many bolts and nuts.

Also find a place online that sells the service manual. You'll be glad you did. Can be a little pricey but it's in valuable if you're doing your own work.

    Mike

Yeah, I am in Canada. From what I have been reading, the Maxim 400 was sold until 85 here. The thing hasn't run in years, so I was gonna put some diesel in the cylinders for a few days to break up anything that would be in there. However, I just broke one of the spark plugs. Had a feeling it was going to happen.

I have extracted a few broken bolts before, but never a spark plug. Should be an interesting skill to develop.

I'm selling my 400 on kijiji right now as well. I'll direct the new owner to this site when it's purchased.

I was going to mention to you too TrueG, I doubt you have the "L" version of the xs400. The L version was a "limited intake" bike, mostly sold in Europe, not in Canada.

I mean ya L='84, but L stands for a bunch of things, it's an oddity letter in Yamaha speak lol

You're probably right KrS14, I guess it's a Canadian oddity. It's registered as an 84, but it's technically an 83 I guess. I suppose calling it an 84 XS400K would technically be correct.
