Read my plugs por favor? (Updated chop)

So I went through the carbs for a second time (long story). Polished everything up. Set float level to specs within 1mm. Enrichment circuit is fully clean and after it warms up it idles just fine. Slides are great! Best action I have ever had on the throttle response (I think the diaphragms being armoralled helped).

I didn't get a chance to ride it though. But, it was running for 7 minutes or so after it was warmed up nice and good and it was cool out so I wasn't worried about overheating.

The plugs were brand new right before firing up this time and I killed the engine at about 4K, pulled them and took the photo. They are lined up 1, 2, 3, 4.

I can tell 1 and 4 are lean. 3 seems VERY rich and I think 2 is just about right. How much affect will the pilot jets have on an engine that is running over 3K?

Any advice would be great!

#2 is still too rich, they should be the color of a brown paper bag.
What method did you use for the running sync' ?

Clear tube if you are talking about the float height adjustment. I have not tried to synch the carbs yet. Runs pretty darned even now that they have been gone through. I did get popping on the left pipe though. Thinking that is from number 1.

You should have done a bench sync' to get them in the ball park, then a running sync' with some sort of manometer or carb tune, once you have done that set the pilot mixture screws to default & THEN start the plug chops.

Ohhhh! Yeah, I did the card method for the bench synch. So next step is manometer then. I will make one and get back to you.

FYI the pilot mixture screws are at 2.75 turns. At least it felt that way.

Maybe my screen isn't showing the plugs very well - but it almost looks like #1 has no colour to it - like it wasn't even firing

It was running for sure but it was cooler to the touch than the other 3 pipes. Definitely seems very lean.

Noob here, but if that cylinder is running lean, shouldn't that pipe be hottest?

When the engine was running, and you said that cylinder was running cooler than the rest - do you mean you could touch the exhaust pipe and it was 'warm', and the others were too hot to touch? If that's the case, then that plug was probably firing, but that's about it. I'd say you had a major air leak in that cylinder. Try it again, see if it's running warm, then give it a bit of choke. If it all of sudden turns hot, then you've got a major air leak or that carb isn't getting gas.

From the looks of 1 & 4 I'd start suspecting the coil also.

So...I agree with your recommendation.

I synched the carbs as best as I could with a home-made manometer (that was fun to make) and I think it is running much smoother.

Ran it around the neighborhood and it is a real strong runner!
