Carb rebuild

    I am going to rebuild my carbs. I have ordered the kits and should be here in about a week. I have a service manual but it doesn’t tell you the procedure for the rebuild. Does anyone have a step by step instruction to remove the carbs and rebuild them without removing the engine? I have done auto carbs before so this will be my first time on a cycle. :? The problem I am having is my engine keeps getting flooded. I have drained all of the carbs, taped on them to un stick the float etc. but it keeps happening again. I know witch one it is but I figure I might as well rebuild all 4 while I have them off. Thanks in advance for any help.

    i found a Haynes manual at Amazon . com, it has a very good step by step carb rebuild chapter, lotsa pictures. It points out its a bad idea to seperate the carbs: its easier to keep them "en banque",...
    I really have no way of sendin this info...

    The rebuild is pretty straight forward. My suggestion is to remove the carb bank and first remove the float bowls. The amount of crud you find in there should let you determine whether or not to do a through cleaning. A flooding problem can be aleviated by replacing the float valves and seats. a through cleaning is much more involved. However a limited cleaning of just the jets is not much trouble. The kits will come with new float seats which use a red washer. I would keep the copper crush washer from the old seats which are much more reliable. Check the idle jets for stoppage if found. They are the ones with the smallest hole. If clogged remove them and soak in carb cleaner. DO NOT try to clear them with a small wire. Any damage will affect carb performance.
    The main jets are removed next. They screw into the emulsion tubes which can be removed from the top after the diaphragms are removed. NOTE that all parts should remain with their respective carb bodies. Use dixie cups or small parts bins or whatever to keep them seperate. I used salt shakers from Wal-Mart and labeled them with different colored tape. The tape will stay while any marker will wash right off when it comes in contact with carb cleaner. I fill the shakers with carb cleaner , insert the jets from #1 carb and cap it. Place blue tape for #1 and then I do #'s 2 - 4. Place all shakers in the carb cleaner basket that comes with it and let sit over night. Remember no rubber or plastic parts can go in the carb cleaner. It will eat them up, but good.
