I have a 82 xj550, Had it in storage for a while. After I got it out I changed the plugs, oil, charged the battery, replaced all the seals in the front chain sproket area, and replaced the throttle cable. Figured it would be near perfect.... Well I poured gas in and within 5min 2 gallons of gas was all over my garage floor. I know I cant rebuild this thing, So does anyone out there rebuild these?

Or anyone have a good one they want to sell?

what makes you say you "can't" ?
    I couldn't before I did...

there's a pretty short list of possibilities to cause that gas puddle... busted/leaking fuel line or petcock, stuck/unsealing needles, floats set too high, shot floats that sink.

if that went down with the vacuum operated petcock in the "on" or "res" setting there's no reason yet to suspect anything more than leaky tank or petcock.

In the immortal words of Rob Schneider
    "You can do iiiiit!"

Floats are solid, they don't "sink."

You have a stuck or obstructed float; and unless your petcock is set to "PRI" you have a petcock issue as well. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25058.html

There are a whole lot more things to do if you want the bike "near perfect."

The carbs are going to need to be CLEANED and some parts replaced, yes. Then they will need to have their float levels set correctly; and be bench sync'ed.

Once back on the bike, they will need to be vacuum sync'ed; which cannot be done until after the VALVES are IN SPEC. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14827.html

Meanwhile you need to attend to the fuel valve (petcock) and see what its issue is.

AFTER you ensure the rear brake isn't beginning to delaminate: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Your 550 has Mikuni carbs; a breakdown is here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=31061.html

    My point is this:

While you CAN pay someone to go through the carbs, there is a lot more work to do once they go back on the bike for it to run right. You're going to need a service manual and to learn to do a lot of this stuff yourself; finding somebody to work on your bike and do it right will be nearly impossible.

PRImary position on petcock is for free flow of the fuel. In ON and REServe gas will not flow without the engine cranking to make a vacuum. If it flows in ON or RES, you have a bad diaphram and the petcock needs a rebuild.

With a stuck float, if the petcock has either failed or is set to PRI, it will allow your carb to overflow and fill your crankcase or airbox with fuel. I suspect it's flowing backwards out of the carbs into the airbox, and then leaking down.

If it was leaking into the crankcase past the rings, it would be a slower process.

HOWEVER, you will still want to check the crankcase for gas. Fuel in the oil is not a good thing.

Also: if you have a busted fuel line, and the petcock fails or is set to PRI, fuel will leak all over the place.
