I have an 82 xj650j and for some reason I am only getting spark out of one coil, I checked that coil on the other wires coming from the ignitor unit and it works... Ive checked the wires from pigtail(coil side) to pigtail(ignitor side) with no breaks. How do I check the CDI? has anyone else had this problem? any insight on this would be helpful, thanks

You need to test the pickup coils, hiding under the side cover on the left side of the bike. You should see approximately 650 ohms across each (ORN~BLK, GRN~BLK). If the coils ohm out ok, the TCI is suspect. It could be that it has cracked solder joints (an easy fix) or something a little more.
If you don't nail it, I'll plug that I offer a TCI refresh to forum members for $25 and will test it on a bike. Contact me for details.
    Good luck!

Finally got around to checking those wires, 700ohms on both pickups. my Ignitor box is a type 5G2-10 and it also has on it FID14-06 and a 209 stamped in it... idk if thats the right one for my bike (82 xj650) ? do you?

I have an 1985 XJ700X Stopped running. I took it to a Mechanic he said "everything works just will not run". He says there is spark to all 4 cylinder but very weak. I was there when he tested the spark very faint light and almost no sound.

Sounds similar to "Half good CDI"

My bike has been at his shop for the last 3 weeks. In my last conversation with him he said his only guess is the TCI is failing. It is the TID14-35. I am (old bikes) very last priority. He said if I find a TCI he will install it immediatly otherwise he will do some more trouble shooting in about 30 days. From the huge amount of technical experiance I have read on this site. Is this a good bet or just a waste of money?

If it just runs I can get it back and start learning this myself since there is a lot of help here.

    Thank you

    Jim

Granite, I would try it with a new / fully charged battery, the fact you a spark on all 4, not sure but the TCI could be OK.

Almost a year later and im back on this project, I ended up getting a new set of coils and a wiring harness off flea bay from a bike with less then 6k mi on it put it all on with the same exact problem. even tho I had a "good" reading on my pick ups i decided to just buy that from the guy on flea bay too. so as im intalling it i notice there is a little blue wire on the bottom of the bike that comes out of the harness for the pick ups. hmmm... ground maybe? well i put the new pickups on for good measure and rigged up a gas tank. and boom that sucker fired up first rotation of the engine!!! This has really lit a fire under my ass to finish this bike. before i had planned a bobber but now im going more in the direction of a dirt track/cafe/streetfighter hybrid. I am very excited about this bike and it has now taken priority in my shop. I will post pics and possibly a video soon. If anyone can justify that the wire on the bottom of the bike was my problem please do so to help anyone else stuck in my situation!

That blue wire should be connected to your oil switch (on the bottom of the sump pan).
I offer a TCI refresh for $30 (sorry, parts are going up in price). I replace all of the electrolytic capacitors in the unit and check all of the semi-conductors (diodes, transistors) after I isolate them. Then I seal the unit back up and test it (if I have the same or similar bike in the stable at the time). I then ship it back to you insured in the contiguous 48 states.
