Hey im new to this site and im nor the greatest gearhead, so i need your help.

It seems that i have a bad ignition coil for the 2-3 cylinders....
now im wondering if a coil from a xj650 from 1985 would fit on my xj650 maxim from 1982?

hope you can help me with this question, scince its the only similar coil i can find here in Denmark (this is where i live) and im in dire need to get this fixed.

Probably, but I don't know for sure.

Are you sure that the coil is bad? How have you tested it?

Can you get measurements from the '85 coil to compare with? If so, measure the resistances of your good 1/4 coil:

    a) Between the two terminals of the two-pin plug for primary resistance (should be 2 to 4 Ohms, I think)
    b) With the plug caps removed from the wires, the resistance from one high tension wire to the other (Should be about 11,000 Ohms)

If the values from the '85 coil are very close, then it should be a good replacement.

By the way, if you're not SURE that the 2/3 coil is bad, here's a troubleshooting guide that will help you verify it: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... uctor.html

2.5 ohms on the low tension side and 11K ohms on the high tension side. Take it of and look for cracks. As far as i know all the coil from XJ650's are interchangeables. Velkommen ombord her er meget og hurtig hjælp at hente - mageløs site.

I have not tested it, but i will try your guide tomorrow.

The problem i have ocurs when my MC gets hot, then the engine starts to run unclean and loose power. I changed the plucks today and took it for a testride and got the same result.
When i got back i tested the plucks for spark. 1 and 4 sparks fine, but 2 an 3 does not... 2 have wery little spark and 3 none when hot.
I was told on another forum that it had to be the coil.

i have done the test and it is the coil, an by closer examination there appers to be some small cracks in one of the ends.

The cracks you see are not uncommon but tend to be an issue when water is present. Have you tried to see if 2&3 spark if you swap the coil input connectors? If you get good spark, you are most likely suffering from either a bad pickup coil or the TCI is dying.
