    Hey All!

I am new here and thought I would say "Hello!"

I recently picked up a couple of XJ's... I got a 81 Midnight Maxim 650 the came in a few milk crates =) It was tore down and the frame was hardtailed and thats as far as the guy got... I traded an old laptop for this project bike =) I am planning a very stripped down solo bobber

The other is a 82 Maxim 750... She runs but has not been treated well... I am planning on cleaning her up to be a commuter (weekdays) and cruisin bike (weekends) for me and my wife... =)

I have owned a few bikes but am still pretty green... I had a 125 dual-sport way back in the 80's and the a Honda 400 cm a few years ago...

I am not new to 2 wheeled vehicles... I do custom bicycle restores and make Art Bikes ( rideable art )... I have also made some custom motorized bicycles... so I am not new to engines and tinkering...

I am looking forward to digging in and making some cool new toys...

I am gonna need some advice and tips I am sure!!

    Peace

    David

Welcome to the site. Before you ride those bikes you need to check the rear brake shoes for de-lamination, the brake hoses, and the tire date codes as a minimum. If you search the site for various topics you will find many already posted, but someone will answer your questions or direct you to a previous post if you can't find what you are looking for. Good luck with your projects.

The 81 Midnight Maxim was the bike that lured me away from my Triumph. It was just out side my budget so went with the 550 maxim. Loved all the "gold".

Howdy and welcome Jaded, you would do well to post your general location with your avatar and put the bike types in your signature. Help could be right around the corner.
To echo the boys (sorry ladies, habit of phrase), you will find all the info you need here with your efforts. I'm assuming that, being you are not new to the game, you have procured the book for your bikes (the Haynes covers both of your models) in anticipation of your endevours.
Best of luck and I look forward to seeing pics of your progress! Welcome aboard!

I was looking at your pics, pretty cool but I've got a question....when you're riding the downhill racer, what do you do when you get to get to the bottom of the hill...assuming of course that you've managed to forestall the high speed wobbles? Since it has no tank, what would you call it? A frameslapper? LOL

Has anyone her gone 40mph on a 10 or 15 speed bike? I don't know about you guys but it sure felt on the knife edge of control to me, and that was only 40 mph....it's gotta be a lot scarier at 75!! I wouldn't be able to p**p for a week!

    Hey JeffK

Most of the gravity bikes also have a steering dampener from a motorcycle on them... I have yet to install mine... They help alot with wobble...

There are some other tricks as well... type of tires is huge... and you have to make sure that you get the rims tuned up by a pro and also get them balanced like you would a motorcycle or car once you have the tubes and tires on...

    =)

I'd be interested in hopping up one of those engines.....I'm guessing that you could get some pretty serious power out of one of them with the right porting combination, by widening and raising the exh, cutting the piston or lowering the intake a couple mm, bringing the compression up a tad and maybe a set of reeds to keep the low end power.....a nice midlength exp chamber with a fat midsection, a 26mm carb....LOL, yeah, that would be fun.....
Sorry, that kind of stuff goes through the mind whenever I see a 2 stroke engine....
    Good luck and WTTC,

    jeff
