Im ok with engine stuff but as far as modding the appearance I am clueless. How would I go about changing the old rectangular headlight to a round one? Do i need to install a new bracket? Is it something I can just purchase online?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

A new bracket would be a good idea if you are going to ditch the aux light (I would).

You should be able to use the bracket from a 650 and any 7" headlight. I'd go with an H4 shell instead of a sealed beam, but if you want to use the sealed beam, it will plug right in to the stock harness.

Or you can get some of the universal fork brackets to mount a round light.

There are quite a few options, actually. Easiest way to look at your options is to go to fleabay and search for 7" motorcycle headlight.

I am going to chime in just because I have been having a hard time finding a decent headlight for the same purpose. Searching eBay for 7" Motorcycle Headlight pulls up stuff, but mostly bottom mount headlights for the HD guys. What comes available for us is not DOT approved.

I personally do not know what the ramifications are for running a non-DOT approved headlight bucket, but it leaves scavenging from other bikes with round headlights as our only option since we need the side mounting capability.

Bikes that have similar headlights are the other Maxims & Secas and Honda CBs of various vintages. I am sure some Kawis and Suzukis will work too. I just don't know which one.

Check Chacal's stuff. He recommends a light from Hella, Euro Power + I think?

I got a used '82 Honda VT750 headlight but I haven't installed it yet so I don't know about the brackets. Like any other task I do on this bike I'm sure it will cost more than I estimated.

An ideal choice for a 7" round chrome shell is one off any XJ550, Seca or Maxim. The shell has a "full diaper bulge" in the lower rear that is ideal for things like extra wiring, or a relay, or modulator "can."

Mounted up as SR500 Headlight pretty easily.

I'm not sure of all the legal mumbo jumbo, but to a CERTAIN respect motorcycles can run with non-dot headlight LENSES (ie euro or diamond pattern). However local laws do vary...

Which is why Chacal recommends (and sells as I recall) the Hella Eruo Vision + conversion kits and such.
