Mystery Master Cylinder

    I have an 82 XJ 750. Unfortunately, I don't think the master cylinder on it is for this bike. The markings on the unit are 5/8 6 V I (or 1). Does anyone know how I can identify what master cylinder I actually have?

    Secas have a cable-actuated MC mounted on the steering head; the Maxims have one mounted on the handlebar (conventional place).

    Here's the link to the pic of my master cylinder. I ordered a rebuild kit, but the piston was too long. Ironically, it matched the one I removed. No wonder the front brakes never worked too well.[​IMG]

    On closer examination, I found the number 7A7 stamped into the cylinder. The number is located just to the left of the opening where the piston is inserted.

    That the one.

    A pretty simple Test is;

    Mount the MC
    Fill 1/2 full.
    Pull Brake Lever and try to develop Hydraulic Pressure.
    Observe Fluid in Reservoir.

    IF, ... Brake Fluid squirts-up like Old Faithful, ... the Seals are Bad*

    * Worn, misplaced or Cylinder is Contaminated of Pitted.

    IF,, ... the Brake Lever can build-up pressure, ... the MC is pumping OK.
