    Okay Everybody,
I sent my carbs off to Rick Massey to be rebuilt, polished, set etc....
OMG!!! I got them back today and did the sync, colortune, sync, colortune deal and my bike is like better than new! I would be willing to bet that I could keep up with some of the bigger cc's out there easily. Rick told me that they would be better than new and I think he is right. These carbs made all the difference in the world. If I get the chance I will do a bigger write up on the work he did but for now I just wanted to let people know that if they want their carbs done better than right, send them to Rick Massey (Rickomatic). Awesome job Rick, couldn't be happier. Thank you!

Uh oh, sounds like Rick did "the adjustment" to them. You are indeed a lucky man!

It's a little known change to the original carbs as was discovered by Amita Yomoguto who began working in the Yamaha factory back in the mid 70's. He was said to be a very dedicated employee who immediately invested as much of his monthly salary into Yamaha stocks. Some said he worked as many as 100 hours per week searching for tuning secrets until the day he discovered, "the adjustment". His very simple modification was said to change the power output on the 550's and 650's to the point that would easily surpass that of the much bigger bikes given their lower weights.

Upon presenting his accomplishment to his immediate supervisiors, Amita fully expected a healthy bonus. He was shocked when the reaction of the firm was to sack him and have him escorted from the building by security personel that very day! His shock turned to anger when he later discovered from former coworkers that the carb bank that he had used to show them his "adjustment" was destroyed as was all of his notes and records which he was forced to leave at his workstation.

Evidently, Yamaha knew that profits were to be made from the 750, 900 and 1100cc bikes and did not want people to be able to purchase an expensive 550 or 650 and still meet or beat the performance of the larger bikes.

Congratulations Old biker, sounds like you have one of the very rare adjusted carb sets.

    Thank you JeffK,
    That was an interesting story.
I do not know exactly all the magic Rick put into these carbs but I do know that when I hit the gas I had better hold on and when I shift my front fork is bouncing like a rubber ball. My bike has never road so well and I owe it all to Rickomatic.

WooHoo! Now YOU know what a properly-running 550 feels like.

Redline in fourth is close to 90mph; whatcha gonna do with those other two gears?

    Congrats.

    Hey Fitz,
    I know what you mean.....
I thought that was something yesterday when I hit the road. I was in 3rd gear and already going 50mph. I looked down at the odometer and said what the hell??? Wow! Does this thing fly now.....

    There's no big Secret.
It's the slow and meticulous process of Cleaning and Polishing the Carbs like a Marine would clean his side-arm.

Leave not one detail unattended too.

FLUSH each Passage with Carb Cleaner and Compressed Air.
Polish Moving Parts to allow them to move effortlessly.
Punch the Emulsion Tubes and Clean them like they're going to be inspected by a mean Drill Sargent.

Thats what happens when you rebuild a set of carbs properly, no shortcuts taken. No suprise that it runs like new again. Shortcuts taken durring carb rebuld causes big headaches.
