I've been trying to remove the seat to my 1981 xj650 midnight maxim. According to the Haynes manual I should be putting my ignition key into the helmet lock, turning it 90* counterclock wise, and pulling the lever backwards. Problem is, the key won't turn to the left. It will release the helmet lock though. What am I doing wrong guys?

Maybe you don't have an original lock, or it's messed up. There should be a peg that comes out from the and into the lever.

I was always able to push the lever in toward the bike then rearward and it would come off the lock.

as you turn the lock try pushing down on the seat at the rear. It may just be stuck.

    Yah,

The little lever that holds the seat in place needs to be pushed forward to allow the lock to withdraw through the hole, does that make sense? it's really tough to turn without doing that.
