Hi all, Just joined the forum...wow what a mine of info. I'm buying a 1983 XJ 550 and going on a road trip this weekend to give the bike a final look over. In Ontario, Canada you have to get a used vehicle information package from the government.

To get this you have to provide either license plate or VIN. I've been trying to get VIN from owner using info from these forums, however the owner swears up down and sideways that his ownership, frame and engine number (9 digits on all) are the only thing he has. License Plate has been transferred to new bike.

He triple checked the frame and it has a sticker that only has 9 digits and the frame stamp only has 9 digits. Is this possible or am I missing something?

    code is: 5K61xxxx2

    Anyone got a suggestion?

    Regards,
    Chris

Hi Lowlife, Thanks for the info....basically just asking if it was possible to register the bike with only 9 digits, i thought 17 digits was the norm.

I'm having problems getting the used vehicle info pack using the 9 digits, license office says number is not being accepted by system.

But your proof that you can use 9 digits to register bike...thanks again for the info.

Had similar problem with California DMV automated system. They said you have to type in an M (Motorcycle) before the VIN for it to work right. Possible fix. I registered mine by simply showing up with the title (from California incidently) that had the VIN printed on it.
17 digit has been required for all vehicles since about 1982 in the U.S. It is possible your toy didn't have that requirement for your market. I wouldn't sweat it unless the Government throws a hissyfit.
    Best of luck.
