Hi! I'm new to riding and picked up my first bike yesterday. A 1982 XJ750J. Was told it used to run, but was sitting for a long time and wouldn't start and it was mine for $500. Hmmmmm.....new battery, spark plugs, new gas, and low and behold, it started!!!!!

    Congrats! Welcome to the site.

    Now the real fun begins-
    Check rear brake for delamination
    Clean carbs
    install inline fuel filter
Change out fuse box to blade style
    check valve clearances
check front brake hoses for date
bleed front brakes (at a minimum)

    Have fun!!

Yeah, it runs now. Not to rain on your parade, but it is going to take a lot of work to get it road worthy. My bike was almost exactly in the same condition as yours. It ran alright...hehe.

    Good luck and have fun!

Congrats Jeepchick, welcome to the world of XJ everything. The search feature on this site will be your very best friend and the rest of us will offer advice and help if near by. Can you post some pics of the bike?

I'll definitely post some pics. We've done a whole tune-up including an oil change. Runs purty good now! Need a new rear tire and trying to figure out the idle problem. Otherwise I'm so friggen pumped to get going!!! Ordered a Haynes manual (which I definitely shoulda done before I started!!! LOL). They're hard little buggers to find!

But from your posts you sound like you are going in the right direction, just don't let your enthusiasm overshadow your safety, we like the people that come here. :D

And we'd like y'all to stick around for a while. The only thing we like more than keeping another XJ on the road around here is keeping the XJ's owner SAFE while riding said XJ
