Long time listener, first time caller...

I just wanted to introduce myself and pick your brains.

I picked up my XJ 650 maxim for $100.00, Got it running and now working through the bugs that come with 20+ years of neglect and 5 years of living outside.

I have an 80 xj 650 that the PO has touched everything on. I have an interesting problem where the idle creeps greatly when warm. So say 1k with the choke just turned off will turn into 3k+ after a 20 minute ride.

I have been chasing down a low speed "cough" on the number 3 or 4 cylinder and didn't see anything out of the normal during the carb cleaning.

Vacuum port covers and vac signal line to the fuel tank look good. The boots to the head are fairly new however, I can not say if they were installed correctly because they were done by the PO.

    Any Ideas?

    Thx

    -Rob

Oh, the pilot mixture screws were set at 2 turns out except the number 3 which was 1 5/8th or so. The only mod is slip-on mufflers but I can't tell you what brand or model.

That lifting of the revs is normally an indication of air getting in round the boots, vac caps or throttle shaft seals, check all round with an UNLIT propane torch, if the gas finds the leak the revs will rise.
    BTW welcome.

Just got in from re-installing the carbs after a good cleaning and rebuilding the front caliper. I don't think the bike has run this good ever! But there is still an idle thing happening. I'll have to track it down some other day. And of course, the brakes still don't work.
