fuses are good...this actually happened twice...once w/ the old battery (warrantied it) and then w/ the new battery.

Chrome or black? Steel or aluminum? (Potential ground issue.)

AHA! Then they're powder-coated (maybe) or painted (likely.)

You need to remove some of the black paint where the switch cluster clamps to the bar; and where the bars clamp to the bike. You can "underdo" it so it won't show; but I'll betcha anything your bars aren't giving you a good ground to the switch cluster.

You wouldn't be the first guy this happened to, including yours truly.

the part i dont understand...is why would it crank the first time i tried it after hooking up the battery and then nothing? when i hit the button i can her something that sounds like a click, but it sounds electrical, like a switch or relay...? and it is only 1 click per button press... i will try the ground thing next chance i get to work on the bike...

I ran a separate wire from the one of the small bolts holding the R/ hand switch block together into the main earth circuit. Make it black and zip tie it to the existing wireing and its hardly noticable. Solves all problems with switch grounding.

    cheers , Murray

As for me, I have a weak battery. As for my starter, it is 30 years old (1981). This has happened at home twice in the last two or three years. I wrapped it with a hammer on the left side of the starter case. It started instantly.

It might be time for Starter Brushes or a visit to the Electrical-end of your Starter for a Commutator douche.

Go ahead and take a peek, ... it's free.
