I need to know the ohm rating of the stock fuel sending unit inside my tank?? ('82 750 Maxim/seca sending unit)
I had it written down somewhere, but I'll be dammed if I can find it now.
I need the ohm rating from empty to full (or vise versa) to be able to get a gauge that works with our sending unit. I know there are automotive gauges that will work, but I want to find the correct one for my mod. Thanks!

IIRC it is 0 ohm full to 90 ohm empty.

The Haynes chickens out with the "manufacturer does not provide specific figures for sending unit...bla bla bal". I could not venture a guess right now but I do have a Seca unit sitting in the garage I might be able to pull out tonight and check. I would go so far as to say they probably are the same since the 82 750 Max gauges work just fine on my 82 750 Seca.

Thanks Professor! Yes, I believe that's right now that I think about it.

Ran across this thread while searching for an answer - I hope you guys have not covered this extensively elsewhere...... I have an 82 750 Maxim. Sitting at idle with a full tank the fuel gauge will go from full , to empty, to somewhere in-between, to wherever it wants to go. Outside of checking connections, is there anything else I should look at?

    Thanks

Mine was fluctuating from 3/4 to empty on a full tank, then once the tank got to 1/2 full, it would read correctly. I removed the sending unit and cleaned the connecting area. I then put a bit more pressure on the spring that holds the contacts together and that solved the problem. It now reads correctly at all fuel levels.

Given that you are experiencing fluctuating readings, I'm going to rule out the external wiring (usually that either works or it doesn't work, not anything in between).
Two thoughts. Have you recently washed your bike? If so, did you shoot water up into the instrument cluster by accident? Are your gauges foggy or show signs of water intrusion?
If not, You need to pull the sender I'm afraid. It's probably got issues and could use a good cleaning. Try to round up the parts to make a cheap baking soda blaster to clean it up.
Good luck, it isn't terribly hard but a new gasket is usually a good idea, wink, wink.

Thanks guys - looks like I have a project for the weekend!

Where can I pick up a gasket?

Look at the top of the page, you should see a banner for xj4ever, run by our very own guru, Chacal.

Well, almost a year later and I never did get a round tuit....

My excuse is that I have three more XJ's (& got rid of three in the last year), but those are all of the Jeep variety!

I need to order up that gasket and get going on the bike! Tell me more about this baking soda blaster....
