xj650 shifting problem

    hi, i don't know if this were i should be asking but here it goes. i have and 81 650 midnight max. problem i'm having is when i start out go for 2nd gear it will not enguage . if i shift with no clutch shifts fine thru all gears . when i use the clutch no matter what gear change it will no into geat . any help would be great thanks . if it helps any there is 14xxx miles on the bike.

    I think you have to adjust the clutch free play either at the handlebar clutch lever or at the clutch see pic.
    (don't shift gears without using the clutch or the fun will be short and then expensive)

    thats what i'm trying to advoid is a high $ fix . i'll check the free play again but seems to have enough . do you the spec. for the free play ?

    There should be 2-3mm of free play at the lever.

    You may need to take the engagement arm off and turn the spline shaft all the way clockwise, then reinstall the arm and readjust the cable.

    I keep my Clutch adjusted to the point of Zero-Lash.

    Make "Critical adjustments" at the Knurl on the Clutch Perch.

    If you have free-play, you can expect the Bike to give you:

    Neutral Fight
    Red Light Creep
    Clunking-down into first

    Make adjustments to provide you with the LONGEST Throw-out.

    There's a photo in archives of what someone did to ADD distance to the Throw-out.
    I don't think you need to alter the Throw-out arm.

    Just get as much movement as possible on the Throw-out Lever with the Clutch Lever.
