I would suspect the cable first. Did you disconnect the cable and test ride it?

nope, i did not do that. the bike has 10k miles on it so i didnt think the cable would be the problem. i might lube that up and try it. thank you for the heads up.

No problem. It's the easier thing to check.

If you have to pull the gauge apart to lube it, be very careful. It's easier than you'd think to crack the face glass.....don't ask how I know LOL

They are NOT easy to get into on the XJ700s
I know of ONE guy that has successfully got into them, fixed it, and put it back together without major damage.
The chrome ring is formed onto the plastic housing and you need to bend the chrome lip back to get it off....then somehow crimp it back down when you put it together. (and hope it's somewhat water-proof)

I have had success by dropping some oil onto the input shaft (where the cable engages into) and around where it spins in the housing. You can also get a little bit on the gears through the signal light cancel switch window (glass tube that looks like a fuse)...but it breaks very easy so be careful.

Don't go nuts since any oil that drips through onto the glass will be there for a very long time and almost impossible to get off.

do you think a silicone spay lube would be better? it sticks to things and lubes the up without the excess drippage. just asking.

    thanks.

    I use Tri-Flow.

If you have a speedo shop in your area (rare, but they do still exist) see how much they'll ding you to stomp a new chrome ring on there once you're done.

I had an instument bulb go "super-nova" and explode inside my "canned" speedo on an SR500 some years back. Speedo shop hit me for $10 to replace the ring after I was done cleaning it out.

It's your cable, not the internals. I've had the exact same issue. Either get yourself a new cable or lube the current one.
