82 XJ650. Had it running before, totally went through and rebuilt carbs. Test drove afterwards and ran great. Went to start it later and no start, found both coils bad. Just replaced coils. Still no start. I am not getting any spark at the plugs. I have voltage to the coils, I ohmed out the pick up coils, both good. Took starter apart and cleaned, cranks better now, but still no spark. I was thinking maybe kick stand switch, but if its bad, the bike wont even turn over, right??? I tried a different ignition module, still no spark. I was grounding the plug against the block, but thought maybe the plugs are bad. So I stuck a screw driver in the end of the wire and held it up close to the block, still no spark.... What am I missing here? Bout ready to just load it into the truck and haul it to the salvage yard!!!! Anyone got a simplifed wiring diagram of just the ignition circuit? My tired old eyes are having trouble following the wiring in the manual.. LOL Got to be something that both coils have in common in order for none of the plugs to have fire..

    Thanks in advance

Sidestand safety circuit prevents spark with bike in gear unless sidestand is up or clutch pulled in.

You can disable the sidestand safety circuit by pulling the sidestand relay. On the Maxim it plugs into the wire harness underneath the tank above the rear edge of the valve cover.

If you get spark with the relay pulled then we need to diagnose whether the problem is with the relay or other parts of the system.

Okay, I just went out and removed the relay. I got spark now!! So, I would assume my next steps are to check the relay to see if its any good, and if it is, than to check the side stand switch, correct? I was originally looking at the wrong relay for the kickstand. My manual says it is the relay located at the back of the tank, just in front of the mounting bolt.....

Ah yes! You have the Yamaha factory manual with the addendum at the front? It shows the relay in the wrong location.

The sidestand switch won't cause your problem UNLESS you are trying to start the bike in gear without pulling in the clutch - in which case it won't crank either. You've either got a bad relay or some strange interaction going on.

Actually it is a Haynes manual. I have the clutch switch unhooked at this point too because it was working backwards for some reason.. I could start the bike before with the clutch out, but as soon as I pulled it in to put it in gear, it would shut off. If this was my bike, I wouldnt worry bout the kickstand relay, would just leave it out and use it like it is. But its the wife's bike and she is a new rider, so I need to get all these safety mechanism's fixed....

That Safety Relay ... although it looks exactly like all other relays ... is unique.

    The Generic Relay is configured:

    [ * -- * ]
    [ # -- #]

    The SAFETY Relay is configured:

    [ # -- * ]
    [ # -- * ]

Replacing a safety relay with a generic relay is DANGEROUS.
The NEUTRAL Sensing signal gets reversed!

Such that ... With the ignition ON and the bike IN GEAR with the CLUTCH LEVER PULLED ... the START BUTTON PRESSED ... the START MOTOR WILL NOT GET POWER and the bike will NOT start.

But, with the ignition ON, bike IN GEAR, CLUTCH LEVER ~~> RELEASED !!!
and the START BUTTON PRESSED ... the STARTER ~~> IS ENERGIZED ... and the bike WILL :

    Lurch Forward ... or,
    UNEXPECTEDLY ~~> S T A R T !!!

If your bike displays the symptoms of incorrect relay in the Safety Relay position -- :

    Remove the relay.
All the safety related features are disabled.
The bike is set to a default which will not allow the bike to be started unless the Transmission is placed IN NEUTRAL with the NEUTRAL Light ON.

I have never replaced the sensor, so I dont think the clutch issue is with the relay. Matter of fact, when I first got the bike everything worked properly. Then the clutch started acting weird so I unhooked that switch. I was having no issues with it starting in neutral, kickstand down until now. I thought I had heard that there was a difference with this relay so was going to get one from mama yama anyways.

    Thanks!!
