    Hello Everyone,

I did some searching and couldn't find the answer. I have an '82 XJ550 Maxim and I would like to switch to a Seca seat, rear fairing, tail light, etc. Is this a bolt-on affair?

    Thanks for the help.

    waldo is correct.

To elaborate just a tad: The frames are different; the Maxim's frame "dips down" considerably toward the seat; the Seca's frame is pretty much straight and level. Plus a lot of the mounting points are different.

Maxim sidecovers attach to brackets on the airbox; Seca has tabs on the frame. The Seca's little tail section bolts to the frame in four spots under the seat; those mounting points aren't there on the Maxim frame.

The bottom line is the same: Nope.

How would one mod a Maxim to get the Seca rear fairing/look? If someone was good with fiberglass, could they make one that looked identical, except had different mounting points?

And can someone post pics of the Maxim frame compared to the Seca 550 frame? Fitz, I'm hoping you have some since you own a few 550s.

Mine are all Secas, so I can't help with comparison pics.

The difference is this: The frame angles down from the steering head at a slightly steeper angle, so that the portion that is horizontal (just to the rear of the tank) is lower than on the Seca (making for a lower seat height.) Then the tail section angles back up more steeply, and the rear "bridge" between the side frame rails is completely different because it supports the rear of the seat and the little tail trunk on the Maxim.

Even if you grafted the Seca's bracketry and mounting points onto the Maxim frame, the "ducktail" would slant up at a rather odd angle.

Just shoot a decent side-on pic (LEFT SIDE) and post it. Maybe a rear-on view of the tail support area too.

Then as soon as I pop the tank off either bike, I'll pull the LH sidecover too and take a comparison pic. Needs to be from the left so the seat doesn't get in the way (it hinges on the right.) Could even be tomorrow I've got some stuff to do to the '81.
