Baffles Removal

    I had a quick exaust question. I have a 83 750 maxim, and on its pipes I was wondering of the baffles are removeable? Do they screw out? I was curious as to how that works. Any information on that would be helpful.

    What do you wish to accomplish with this? I ask as unless you are changing the carbs, or rejeting them, the CV carbs NEED the back pressure to work right. Just letting you know (I haven't done this but have seen it done and the resultant aftermath). Good luck! Rob.

    hello im new to this sight but have some great deal of knolage of mechanics i just bought a 82 maxim 750 from the wisconsin dels area and it was jetted up and cam'd i asked the guy why he dident change the muffler to alow more flow here was his answer ( this guy is a certified mechanic at a yamaha dealership) "it would sound a lot nicer but do to the loss of back pressure you would loose torq and torq is your hp at rpm. But yes you could do this if you pop the rivits out and pull the inner part of the exhust out and put just a straight pipe through it and weld it up to the end flat plate the resalt would be a poping every time the cylnder fires and some back fire when letting off the throttel when acceling hard or thraping on the throttel. as with my 81 i had i tried this and it did not sound verry nice and un pleasint the listen to when riding. My advise to you is to take the inner part out (the baffel's) and cut the baffel in haf length wase and take a pipe the same dimater and cut it in haf length wase and weld the 2 togather and re-instal. The resalt is a deper tone and a littel more noise wich im sure your going for with out loss of to much back pressure. If any one want's to say that this is not possible it's because there is a lot of welding metal ban saw cutting and time put into it. If you want to relly do this you haf to have the tools and time if you want help doing this E-mail me and i can give you just about step by step instructions. iwasatoad @yahoo.com put subject as XJ exhust or somting to make it stand out

    Listen to these guys, I just removed mine and over the last two days the bike has run worsre and worse...the back pressure is definetly needed to run these bikes...

    The back pressure is essential for the CV carbs to function correctly. Unless you plan to change out to some slide carbs or really tinker with your jetting and such, you would be well advised to steer clear of muffler mods. This tune is getting old. Hear this all the time, especially when a car mechanic gets on the wagon. There are a few sites that cater to the mod crowd on this topic (don't remember any names but they are out there) and their experience should help guide any aspiring mod'ers. Not to be undertaken by the faint at heart, this is a rough go. I'm not saying don't mod, but encouraging the use of educational resources available to make learned decisions. I hate hearing that somebody did thus and such only to find out they screwed up their ride. It hurts me as much as the bike. Sorry, enough rant. I'm getting down now. Iwasatoad, sounds like you've got a pretty good idea maintaining the baffle but improving upon it. As far as the noise issue, some places (Los Angeles and Ventura County in California) are testing sound at regular hangouts and hauling off bikes that violate the noise laws established by federal law. User beware!

    ug.

    At least no one has asked about a fuel injection mod yet ;)

    Chuckle, your on to something. I'm a big fuel injection advocate but have yet to see a practical conversion. I saw one but it was high dollar and the sponsorship covered the cost of one-off type prototyping toys. Lucky buggers. My philosophy has been to optimize what you have been blessed with and in that pursuit, power will come as a consequence, pure and simple. The designers got paid well to come up with some solid engineering and there is usually only a little wiggle room in the designs to play with. Beyond that and you have to re-engineer a lot of stuff. I'd rather a solid reliable than a wishful (and usually short lived) fast. Best regards Woot, Rob.

    i haf to agree with robert when i stated "The resalt is a deper tone and a littel more noise " it will defently be lounder not so much at idle or cursing RPM's but if you get on the throttel i mean face it it's like straight piped car's and trucks theay arnt loud till you get on it and depend on where you live this could cause a proble but in this it's kinda like riding you have the power to speed relly easy but do you same for the sound it's nice to just be able to give it a rev when you want to show off a little but i hope we are all responsible adults and know when and when it's not a good time to do it example while crusing between an old fok's home and a hospital at midnight.


    i mean hay ya i did it it should cool have a beffery idle to it and crusing noise it's barley louder like most baffel removel's or mod's but you cant relly tell it's louder till you thrap on the throttel so id like to re-state my post i made before if you would like this mod rember ( you have a brain use it).


    With that said to every one who read's this dont go off thinking i dont like loud pipes i just like it when im not sleaping or enjoying a nice dine at a fine resturant and i hear some one giving the throttel all it's got to make noise.


    Well that's my end on the subject so ill leave a littel bit of a funny but some time's ture statment for you all to think about even though i'm sure you have herd it

    Seca turbos run blow through CV carbs I believe. The CX500 turbo's were FI.

    Can't agree about your loud pipes saving any lives iwasatoad. The Hurt study clearly pointed out that visibility was the single greatest factor in preventing tragedy. It also pointed out that exhaust modification was present in a higher number of victims," Motorcycle modifications such as those associated with the semi-chopper or cafe racer are definitely overrepresented in accidents". I would encourage you to check out http://www.magpie.com/nycmoto/hurt.html when you have a little time to learn more about what factors were found to be present in his study. Your considerate view on exhaust modification is however very rare and appreciated. I'm in complete agreement with your common sense approach. I'm not stupid enough to say there is nothing to be gained by flow moding your exhaust, I just wish more people would consider the rest of the community when they do it. There is some moron who blows down the avenue a quarter mile from the house around midnight at least once a week and it really rankles me! Seems this bothers you too. I believe that is because we are decent caring people who consider more than just ourselves in the choices we make. Good on you! The smaller footprint we leave on our environment, the better. For what little loss of "freedom" we suffer for not having straight pipes, we reap greater respect from our community. Not to mention our CV carbs don't like the loss in back pressure. Think your right Joel, the Turbos were pressurized CV's. Another point about noise is that if your exhaust is louder, your ability to hear things is impared because your sitting on top of your noise! I don't know about you, but my hearing is another sense I employ when I ride and I wouldn't want to impare it in any way! Just my 2 cents. Peace.
