    Hey all,

So I had a weird morning.
I was riding to work and stopped on a hill at a light, turned off the bike, and let it rest in gear while I adjusted my jacket. When I went to restart the bike it would chug a few times then the started sounded like it was grinding or kicking back out of the gears. chug.. chug.. grind, chug.. chug... grind...

I pushed it around the corner and then when I hit the starter she fired right up...

I thought it was maybe something to do with the bikes weight being on the gears so i shrugged it off.

about 100 meters up the road she cut out electrically and died. Netral light and headlight came on, she would chug and grind but no fire.
So I turned around to bump her and she would not fire even coasting down the hill in second it would just not fire.

So I pulled it over, cursed a bit, then pulled a plug to check for spark. Sure enough there was spark (managed to get a figer in between the plug and the head... sure didn't need a coffee at work this morning...

Put the plug in, she fired right away, and I rode the rest of the way to work...

I am going to assume a relay/safety switch is failing but any reccommendations for where to start?
and any idea why it could cause the starter to grind?

    Cheers
    Dave

Anyone have any Ideas?? I am having the same issue on 81' xj650h. I did some reading about starter solenoid causing opposite problems where the starter does not disengage. Could there be an issue with the solenoid?

First place to check for intermittent behavior is the fuse box. Have you replaced it yet?

Sure could. But there could also be a good half-dozen other causes as well. (For the OP's issue.)

As for the starter not DISengaging; that does tend to point toward the solenoid.

I was just mentioning an opposite problem to see if there could be a related issue.

On both of ours the starter IS disengaging prematurely, causing a gringing noise.

As marshallnoise says above, something intermittent like that could be a fuse - my XJ cut out the other week and I lifted the fuse-box lid and everything looked fine. It wasn't until I actually took the fuse out that I found that one end-cap was loose and that I could pull it all the way off and put it all the way back on. The fuse was broken but worked most of the time. It was in there when I built the bike so could have been like that for years - I now have new fuses, and carry some spares.

Sounds like battery voltage is low, check your alternator recently to see what it's putting out?
