First choker is that the 550 engine is chain drive, and the larger Secas are all shafties.

Are you looking for more take-off power,or more top end...I know, probably both. If you could choose one or the other, you might be able to reach your goal by changing to different sized sprockets.
Another possibility is to go the aftermarket exhuast/air filter/and carb re-jetting route,if it has not been done already. A bit more $$$.
Have you ridden this bike yet? If not, don't let the size fool you,a good running 550 Seca is no slouch!
Good luck, and welcome to the community!

Welcome to you Oleary. I'm surprised, most 550 owners love the power they have. Little screamers from what I hear. If your looking for more snoot out of the scoot, a bigger bike is about the only reasonably priced option (anything can be done for your bike, just be prepared to pay out the wazoo).

O'leary, I've got the exact same bike. Was looking for something in a 650 or 750, but the price and low mileage on the 550 were too good to pass up. Have had it about a year, and it's about the best investment I've made. Had a few offers to sell it, but it ain't goin' nowhere. And I've taken out more than a fair share of bigger bikes (650, 750, Sportster). Of course my buddy's GSXR600 blows by me like I'm standing still, but technology has come a long way in 25 years, lol.

If you can find one, the FJ600, FZ600 and the Radian motors will bolt in. They all used the same motor bases as the seca 550. If you really want it to rip then put in the wiesco 652 kit in it and you will have a motor that will pull like a freight train :) Fastes time thru the 1/4 mile for me was 11.7 at 105 mph with Willow Springs roadrace gearing in it :)

I never thought I ever say or type these words:

"You got to start watching more TV!"

With all the 21st Century, Hi-tech, Computer-aided, Laser, Plasma and Fluid cutting ability ... plus, the ability to make welds the size of tree limbs or join a tear in a sheet of aluminum foil ... you "Could" just-about stick any engine you want in there.

thanks for the input guys. I've been riding the bike for a year now and I definitely think its peppy, and for an 81 its in great shape but being the only bike i've ever ridden i just wondered how much more power the bigger engines had to offer. thanks for the help
