I was reading in an archive from 2005 that there was at that time a "Shim Pool" going on where a person could get the shims they need to adjust their valves ans send back the shims they no longer need. Is this still going on? I found a site where I could get shims but I can't remember which site it was.

Yes, contact Brad Bowen for the shim pool, I also have a shim pool, and Len Chacal at info@xj4ever.com (or click on his logo at the top right of every page) sells new ones.

Regarding mine, what size shim do you need, and what sizes do you want to swap? I'll see what I have/need.

Not to swoop in on your post here, but I was directed to find a "shim pool" I have 2 that I need to swap out for 2 smaller size shims. I have Y280 and a Y285. I need a Y270 and another Y275. If they are spoken for by Harvey1 could you direct me to someone who might be of some assistance? Thanks.

Are these shim pools still up and running? I'm needing a 265, two 270's, and a 275.

    Thanks!

I would like to encourage that if you get used shims, and do not know the history, please demagnatize them just in case they were magnetized along the way.

How are they demagnetised? Heat and a swift blow?

Yeah....seen that link...given that the shim receives heat and hammering in spades this is probably an urban myth.....be interesting if someone out there had a spare shim they could magnetise than apply mild heat/hammering and see if it still likes iron filings 8)

I have 2 285's & 2 not marked from my valve adjusting. Checked the 2 not marked with my old micrometer, seem to be 285's.If someone has 2 frame neck reflectors, how about an even swap?

do not heat a shim, if you knew how hot to heat and how long to hold it at that temperature and how to control the cooling , you'd know not to do it

One of the Factory RECOMMENDED Methods for removing Valve Adjustment Shims is with a Mechanics Shop Magnet.

I think it is safe to say that a Shim will not be magnatized in the short time that it gets handled during removal.

I suppose those who have them, ... use them.

The SnapOn Tool, ... telescopes and swivels.

I've seen a few Home-Brew that were once Hidden Key magnets attached to the dowel of a wooden clothes hanger you get when you rent a Tux.

All: I posted and watched this develop. I wrote what I did due to what I was taught on this board elsewhere. I may have been wrong, but I absolutely trust a few of you who have told me to never magnetize shims....not arguing; just sayin'

After fighting with hemo's and little drivers I gave the mag
a shot. Best way to remove the shim IMHO.

Bigfitz will very much disagree (and BF is really knows these motors) but in this case I think Ill have to stick with the mag.

I've asked a few local shops and they all use a mag.

No, I won't "very much" disagree, and although I still don't think it's a good idea; I too just recently noticed that in one of the factory books it does indeed say to use a magnet to remove them.

However, in a different factory book, it cautions AGAINST the use of a magnet for the reasons I've always stated.

So, honestly, I dunno. But since hemostats and a tiny screwdriver work fine for me, I'm going to stay away from the magnet. Maybe it is just an "urban legend" but I don't want to find out the hard way.

I used a small pair of needle nose pliers to get my shims our and a small non-magnet flat head screw driver to pop them out of place. The hardest part for me was putting them back in.
