The X is a liquid cooled 20 valve engine.
The X model is XN or XNC (CA) and the regular xj700 is n or s depending on whether it is an 85 (silver engine) or 86 (black engine)

The liquid cooled 20 valve genesis engine kicks some serious ass!!!! Found in the Maxim x, Fazer and the FZ.

The airheads are much easier to work on from what I've heard. I love my airhead, got plenty of power

I'm not an airhead carb guy. Hitachi if I remember correctly. The biggest issue with the Hitachi's is that if you don't pay attention to the jets under the vacuum slide? they are numbered differently and threaded the same. The X's mikunis don't have that issue. You cannot (ok, you COULD) put a jet in the wrong hole. As far as ease of working on them (I've had 4 airheads and 7 x's) they are both about equally a pain.

The x's engine is more powerful, but a bit more 'touchy'. I rode an airhead for ~400 miles last summer, and I both enjoyed the ease of power delivery and the seat more than my x. That said, when I twist the throttle of my x....she goooeeessss. The regular airhead is quite well behaved and a valve adjustment on the airhead is FAAAR easier than the X.
