I'm Terry Pearson and new to XJbikers. I just started riding again after 21 yrs. My son recently bought a Katana, I rode it a few or so times and got hooked again. I've just purchased a 81 Seca 750R (not even tagged yet) and am having a problem with the headlight warning light staying on. The headlight wasn't working when I purchased the bike and the previous owner told me he may have left some wires off when he tried to install a round lamp to replace the original headlight. I found the fuse blown when I got her home and found the bulb spade connections shorted (hence the blown fuse). I fixed that and my headlight works but now my warning light blinks constantly. I'm thinking now that my headlight warning circuit got fried but I really don't know. Not sure where to go from here. Since the auxiliary light isn't working, could that cause it?

    Thanks,

    Terry Pearson

    Re: Hello Everyone!!....

    Terry:

The first thing you should do is excise the original Fuse Panel and replace it with a brand new Panel.

As for that Aux headlight ... You need to do a "Test Light Festival" and see what you have for "Hot or Not" ... on the wiring for the Aux Light for all the conditions: Off, On and Running ... up and down the line.

Do you have working Hi and Low beam?
You might have a situation where the Aux light wires are really the ones powering the headlight ... and the headlight wires are dead because the headlight relay is cooked.

I enjoy "Easy Listening" CD's playing when I'm doing a Test Light Fest!

(Cut-out a small section of leather and tape it on to the inside of your index finger ... then, you don't have to worry about your finger becoming a pin cushion when you stick the tip of the test light through a wire. You'll work faster ... guaranteed)!

    Hi Rick,

The fuse box is definitely history as soon as I get the parts.

My Hi and Low beam are working and since I was lucky enough to get a Yamaha XJ 750 RH manual with the bike I checked the wire color codes to the headlight and they are correct.

I haven't even checked the Aux. light bulb. Hopefully it's just blown and I can postpone the Easy Listening Muzak for the time being. My service manual looks to be for a Maxim and doesn't show the Aux Light circuit so I don't know if it being out would cause the headlight warning. Do you know?

I was also wondering where I can get some of the relays when they go and replacement light bulds.

    Thanks,

    Terry

    Yes. I think it would.

The relays are a common "Generic" part. The relays were outsourced like lighting and switching.

There's a difference between load bearing relays and the Safety Relay.
The Safety Relay looks like a std relay but has a different hook-up pattern.

The old fuse panels are highly prone to failure and cause a great deal of problems with performance ... primarily ignition related.

We recommend a variety of choices.

The 6 Terminal one available from Wirewerks has been used by many.

    Hi m0pp3ry,

The old fuse boxes are worn out. The clips that secure the fuses are breaking off and/or are becoming too loose to secure the fuse for proper contact. One guy posted on here that his main fuse clip broke and he lost everything while driving the bike down the road. Last night a guy posted a picture of how he replaced his old set with new ones under the subject of Broken Odometer. Some guys are using the blade types to replace the less reliable glass fuses. Either way you decide to do it, the sooner the better.

Thanks for that link Rick. That's what I'm going to use to replace mine.
