I need help figuring out what bike I have

    Just picked up a 1982 Maxim atleast thats what i was told it was...but I picked up a used exhaust system as it didnt have one and it doesnt fit...how do I tell what bike I have? thanks in advance for any help

    I now know that it is actually a 650 rather than a 750 as the engine has 653cm3 stamped in it..lol

    650 and 750 exhaust should be the same to bolt up I believe.

    really? the problem i have is under the motor where the 4 head pipes come together then go to the mufflers

    my vin is 5K5001260 so I take it mine was made in the middle of that year production right? My insurance got mad that my vin was short and their computers didn't like it LOL

    That is your "shorty" VIN. The full 17-digit VIN should be on a label on the side of the steering head; or it can be "recreated" using the formula that chacal has spelled out in his Model ID and VIN section. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html It also tells you that your bike is number 1,159 for that serial number series, but you have no way of knowing how many (total) were made that year.

    Date of manufacture should also be stamped on the "big" label.

    I tried to find a big label but had no luck. That formula was insane. I was terrible at calculus LOL But it really is of no real importance as I know my bike make and model. I'm pretty good with guitar serials though.
