In a few days I will be attempting to change my 85mph speedo to a 160mph unit from a 79 XS1100. Both bikes both use the same size tire and wheel. The only difference will be in the wheel drive unit, they both carry different part #'s from Yamaha. Hopefully the calibration between the two gears will be near identical, but if not spare parts are available on eBay.
Modifications to my housing will be needed to make this fit and I will keep everyone up to date on the progress when my parts come in. If anyone has done a speedo change on a 750 Seca before any input would be greatly appreciated.

And if 85 mph ain't enough, how fast do you plan to go? LOL
I know, I know, it's just goofy just having it only go up to 85 mph, but if you think about it, how often do you go faster? I figure if the needle starts coming around back to zero, I'm going fast enough!

Had a friends 81 XJ750RH speedo that came apart. I can tell you that they don't mount up the same and it sits taller inside the housing once you set it in there.

You may need to do a little Dremel work to reconfigure the inner housing to fit the formerly "canned" instrument.

Take a look at how I did my 550 Seca: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=22823.html

The drive unit at the wheel should not be a concern, they all have the same rpm/speed ratio.

Looks pretty good! I just never liked the design of the old square design of the Secas gauges. That's the main reason I went with a little round speedo instead.
Now let's see how far you can make that needle climb!!!

Isn't rolling back an odometer illegal? I know it is up here.

The bike is mileage exempt in Illinois due to it's age and the's odometer 5 digit limit & there is no state inspection here for bikes. I just did it for the ascetic's and I keep actual mileage in my personal maintenance logs.

It is possible to change the odo to read whatever mileage you want it to, with just a little finesse.

When I put a new speedo in my '83, because it was brand new I left it at "0," also since it marked the end of the resto and the beginning of the bike's "new life."

I'm going to be replacing the one in my other bike too (with a prettier stocker) and will adjust that one to match the bike's actual mileage.

Just an FYI for anyone who wants to do this type of upgrade in the future. First, I haven't read every thread in here in case someone else already made this suggestion. But the Seca 750 was also made with an international type speedo. I owned an '81 Seca 750 with one here in the States. It went from 0~135 or 140 mph, but the mph were secondary numbers. Both were on the speedo display. The primary numbers were in Kilometers per hour. I know that speedo was on the bikes sold in Canada. I bought my bike second hand. So, you may be able to find one of the other speedo's. Of Course then you'd have the wrong mileage on the bike. Just a thought worth considering. Hope it helps someone.

all you have to say is you replaced the unit they wont bother you that way. In the states most motorcycles titles say odometer exempt

The odometer can be easily set to whatever mileage you want it to read. I left one of mine at "0" and changed one to match the one it replaced, for the reasons listed above.
