Oil light stays on when I try to start the bike the starter doesnt turn over does nothing just the oil light stays.. The bike started a little rough at first today but started on full choke I felt comfortable that the rpms sounded solid and consistent on warm up full choke so I ran inside for helmet and jacket just as soon as I get inside the rpms go wideopen I run to the bike and take the choke off and the rpms went down but wouldnt keep an idle well so I drove down our private road and came back by then the bike was running ok on its own so I turned it off.. When it was time to put the bike in the garage I wanted to ride it into it, so I tried starting it wouldnt start. keept on trying I was getting frustrated The starter sounds strong on this bike so I kept trying. On a few attempts I would hear a clackle sound from what felt under the seat I would let of the starter immediately has made that sound before and started afterward with out the sound. The sound doesnt happen much just started noticing it lately actually. So kept trying then nothing oil light came on and thats were I'm at right know So I have no idea were to start looking or what to look at? I did an oil change a couple miles ago and the bike hasnt leaked any oil so I know it has enough oil almost 3 quarts I put in it. But i cant see any oil in the oil glass on the engine when it is on its side stand but when upright the glass is full is that the way it should be? Thanks for any help you can give me GOD BLESS

Sounds like the battery is run down. Check its fluid level and charge it. I think the clattering you're describing is the starter clutch letting go, which it will do more easily when the battery is low, or when you've changed to an oil it doesn't like as much, or when it's just plain getting worn out.

Also check that the bike is not in gear. The engine will not crank if the bike is in gear and the clutch is not pulled in. If your neutral switch is bad or intermittent, the bike may think it's in gear when it's not. Try pulling in the clutch and see whether it will crank.

On the not-starting-when cranking side, pull one (or several) plugs and see what they look like. Dry, wet, clean, black, etc. If they look decent, you can also check for spark (assuming you get it cranking).

What's the history on this bike? Has it been running fine up 'til now?

I couldnt sleep so got up early and was going to throw the bike on the charger to see if it would help. I figured just try starting it one more time for the heck of it and started right up no problem.. This time I was on the bike and made sure the kickstand was up. also the last time I had the bike running last night I ended stalling it because it was in gear still and the kick stand down and I released the clutch and then stalled out immediately does all this have any connection??? I was really worried too hopefully no more problems. Thank you for your insight

If you let the clutch out while in gear, WITH the kickstand down, the bike will kill itself because of the kickstand.

Make a habit of starting it in neutral unless you are running from a bank robbery... then just leave it running.

    Yes. That is normal.

The bike is also supposed to stall if you put the sidestand down while it's in gear; and won't run the starter if it's in gear without pulling in the clutch.

There are a series of interlocks that keep you from starting the bike in gear (unless the clutch is in) OR riding off with the stand still down.

It sounds like you need to get ahold of a MANUAL, and soon.

It also sounds like you may have overfilled the oil a tad. There is a number, probably "2500CM3" cast into your clutch cover near the oil filler hole. This is your oil capacity; "CM3" means CC's, so it means 2.5L. A slight overfill is OK to keeep the oil sensor "happy" but you should still have a bubble showing at the top of your sight glass with the bike on the CENTERSTAND and having been OFF for at least 10 minutes. You should see NO OIL with the bike on the sidestand.

Hey Bill, wouldn't it be more convenient to use the drive up for a bank robbery? :?
