Ok, got a 1982 650 with more than 70000 KM on it. The only problem I found with it is that if I try a shift gears, any gear, above 5200 rpm it feels like it slipping. When the rpm drops down to about 4800 it catches and very thing is good. I have had it up to about 7500 rpm and no slippage in any gear. Problem is only when I shift gears. Was wondering if any one else has had this problem.

If your clutch isn't out of adjustment, you probably need to replace some clutch parts. Chacal has everything you need and it's pretty easy to do. With those miles you should probably replace both hard (if not done before) and soft plates and certainly new springs.

Oh, I think we can safely assume it's time for a clutch, unless it was already done and somebody used the original springs.

Basics here; http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html although this is for the 550/600s your bike will be virtually the same but even simpler. Your clutch won't have tabs on the plain plates to worry about nor does it have the goofy "clutch boss spring" just a good ol' set of normal plates. Be sure to use new springs.

Are you using any kind of synthetic oil?

    Just a thought :)

No on the syn motor oil. I have been using 20w50 since i bought the bike 4 years ago. Ok I guess I have to start looking for parts. I'm guessing that Chacal is in the States? It would be easier for me to find the parts in Canada. If anyone knows a good parts place please let me know.

I still recommend Chacal, but if you really don't want parts from the states, PM me.

    70,000 Km's on a Clutch, ... ???

By the time I rolled into 40,000 Miles on my 900, ... I was already on my third set of Clutches.

If that's the Original Clutch, ... you should get a mention in the Guiness Book!

I am guessing that the clutch has been replaced atleast a couple of times but I have no bills and the guy I bought it off of didn't have done it so .... At the moment I have the bike in BC but at the end of August I'm having shipped to Ont. When that happens I will talk to you tskaz. Thanks.

Even using the 20W50 oil, be sure the oil is "conventional" auto oil or oil specifically for motorcycles. My clutch was slipping after I rebuilt the carbs (dumped a tankful of fuel into the crankcase) and changed the oil using just some auto oil I already had in the garage. I couldn't understand what happened and thought the need for "special" motorcycle oil was just a bunch of BS. Turns out the additives in most auto oils nowadays are just too slippery for a motorcycle clutch. I changed the oil to "conventional" oil, no extra slippery additives, and ..... no more clutch slipping. Its cheap enough to try before rebuilding the clutch, if it doesn't work you wasted $10 and 1/2 hour.
