I was wondering how easy/possible/plausible it would be to switch out my giant plastic box dash for a set of gauges from an xs850. they are a bit simpler looking, have the lights that I want, and the tach still redlines at 9000.

Also, is it possible to hook up a mechanical tach? Is it possible to put the drive gear on the front of the engine?

it looks easy, but will it be that easy...or is there something im missing?

I also know that i will be losing my fuel gauge, but since the wiring is there, can i just buy another fuel gauge and hook it up? is there something that has to be changed with the sending unit, or am I good to go?

    thanks for your help!

The speedo might work but I thought the XS850 tach was mechanical (the 750 Seca is electronic). The XS850 warning lights can be made to work if you do some splicing, but you may need to do some rewiring to eliminate the other OEM LCD warning array sensor points. Also - headlight power comes through the gauge cluster. Look up some other 750 Seca projects where the gauges were replaced (several here in Modifications).

Edit - I see you also discovered the tach differences. You would need to convert your head to a mechanical-drive tach setup if you wanted to use the mechanical tack. Far easier to use a different electronic tach.

    Zap,

I would like to use an electronic tach, but there are so many mechanical tachs available, and a bit cheaper than the electronic ones....I was hoping to be able to go that route.

I dont mind splicing wires and the such..i've read just about every thing on here in the mod's forums for the headlights...but i couldnt find anything downgrading to a mechanical tach....

i have never used any of the lights, and out of convienence i thought i'd hook them up if possible...ill see what i come up with

    thanks for the info!

There is know where for a tacho cable to go on a 750. You would have to find a nothere set of clocks with an electronic tach, and wire that in.

    Ledicott,

Can't I change somethign with the heads, in order to put a mechanical tach on?

If not, what other yamahas offered an electronic tach? I just can't find any for sale online, and all I keep finding are these little crappy chinese micro tachs, or ones that are 5". I can't find just a 3" electric tach.

    any ideas?

The following bikes use the round guage elctronic tach
    83 750 maxim
    82-83 650 maxim.

    Redline: 9500

You will have to determine if the guage size ,and mounting matches.

The ones for the Virago work, too...I like them, b ecause they are round, and the whole dash can be changed over, with minimal effort

    Thanks for the help!

I've been searching High and Low and can't find any gauges that I'm happy with. I found these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWAX%3AIT on ebay, but I'm not sure about how they will mount up, or how they will look.

And as always, I'm a bit leary about the china specials.

Any other Ideas on decent looking electric tach/speedo setups that aren't exorbitantly priced?

    MikesXS has some:

I just ordered a pair of the 2.25 diameter ones myself, so I can't say yet if I like them or not, but they aren't too expensive and look decent. I believe there was even a thread on here somewhere that walked through how to wire them up. Not sure about the difference with the 750 electric vs. mechanical though.

There have been several XJ750 listers who have changed their stock gauge cluster for something else (sometimes new, sometimes old or different). Do a search in "Modifications" for "Atari" and you will probably get more hits than believable.

I have searched all of this site, and get loads of information, but when I return to the ebays, googles, and amazons of the shopping world, I keep getting stumped on finding ones that I like, can afford, or look nice.

I dig the ones from Mikesxs, but they don't have an electric tach that is the same size as their speedo...and the one that they do have is part of their "kit" and it doesn't have any of the warning lights, which means making up some sort of light board....

I was hoping to have something simple and easy, but it doesn't look like that...and i've been spending some time (with my share of ear busting by the wife) and I still come up empty with a gauge set that would work...

I don't wnat to have different size or color gauges...I dont care anymore where they are made, as long as they are affordable....

Since you like the speedo from Mike's XS, you should check out Raven's 750 Seca rebuild thread. He used a Mike's XS speedo with a partsnmore.com electric tach (but replaced the tach's incandescent bulb with a #74 white SMD LED to match the speedo).
