Pulled the carbs tonight to clean them. The rubber carb mounts to the engine are in bad shape. Two are split and the other two are weather checked.

Is there any reason that this piece can not be fabricated from metal?

I was thinking of making a metal nipple for the engine side and using a rubber hose, to marry the carbs to the nipple.

Any thoughts? Who ever said almost " unobtainable and expense" was correct.

Heat transfer and vibration would be the concerns. The original part is a metal/rubber/hard plastic(?) composite to begin with.

XJ4Ever has the manifolds; plus they pop up on eBay all the time. NOTE: In regard to eBay parts, especially in this case: The YICS and non-YICS motors' manifolds are different a fact that escapes most eBay sellers.

That being said, cracks on the outside aren't reason to replace; only if the cracks go all the way through. The biggest issue is the possibility of breaking a manifold bolt off in the head.

The center two may be salvageable, the outside two are split completely through. Bike Bandit has them in stock, to replace 4 of them would be 240 bucks.
I don't think the bike is worth much more than that. Another XJ forum mentioned using a silicon material and strapping tape to repair them.
    I will try that first.

Long rang forecast is that I will attempt to create a replacement part.
I do not wish to repeat this process someday in the future. Suitable materials have been located. Now it's a matter of time and ambition.

I read using silicone to seal cracks can fix those. I could be dead wrong.

my 1980 XJ650 had issues with every one of the carb boots. I used a high temp. RVT silicone. I coated the exterior of all the boots to prevent them from leaking/sucking. Just a thin layer of silicone all the way around them. It worked great but it's not the prettiest fix. I intend on replacing them when I have the money but right now it's just not feesible. Hope this helps.

I have an '80 Maxim 650 that would stall every time I came to a stop or just tried to run at idle. I replaced all four intakes and gaskets last year, figuring I had better get them while they were still available. It turned out that my intake bolts were slightly loose - and apparently that was where the leak was. I had already purchased the intakes, so I changed them anyway. I probably only needed the gaskets. Bike runs great now.

I will sell my 4 old ones if anyone is interested - they have cracks on the outside but not on the inside. The new ones were expensive - so I would like to get a fair price for the used ones. Contact me and make an offer. I can supply pictures.

New carb holders were frustratingly difficult to locate - I bought mine online at Interstate Cycle in NC.
