    Hey All,

    It's been ages but a couple of moves and a divorce and I'm just getting back on with it.

    My XJ900 was bought in pieces and has since been completely pulled apart and put back together. Engine has been completely rebuilt (split cases, replaced bearings, timing chain etc) and when back together it kicked over fine but required choke and was backfiring a lot. I was able to rev the throttle and take it around the block but when the back firing kicked on I decided to make some adjustments.

    I have since adjusted the idle and made the mix a little richer and now she kicks straight over and idles beautifully. However, as soon as I throttle it dies.

    I've read a lot of threads and there is a lot of advice on here as always but I was wondering whether someone might have a quick approach to what I should look at first?????

    Thanks. oby

    Same thing just happened to me a minute ago. Spark plugs were crossed. I usually check the stupid stuff first, but i personally just make lots of stupid mistakes.

    OK....

    So after posting I went back down stairs to look for leaks and to ensure that the vaccuum hose was correctly fitted. All seemed good. I kicked her over and she revved up to about 6K. I killed it, adjusted the idle down and then 4K so I brought her back down to 1K and she sat there nicely. AND, now the throttle works just fine.

    Any thoughts.

    My only issues now are that she is still spitting a little and to be honest I'm not confident that if I head back down I'll get the same results.

    I'll keep trying and keep posting but any advice or guidance along the way would be great.

    Cheers all. oby

    My guess is a float level problem - time for a carb overhaul.

    I'll make the rash assumption that the valves got put into spec in the course of the rebuild; and second that vote: float levels.

    Followed by a patient and accurate bench sync;

    then your running vacuum sync.

    I've no idea what the recommended "starting" position is for the pilot screws, but I'd start 1/2 turn richer because it's a new motor.

    But first go back and double-check the cam timing.
