2.5 Liters of Castrol Semi-Synthetic MOTORCYCLE 20W-50 is what many of us use. Its not the best, but it's good and it's inexpensive.

It mostly has to be oil specifically for motorcycles, anything else will cause the clutch to slip.

The book calls for 20w-40, but that is hard to find sometimes. If you will be riding below 50 deg F most of the time, it's 10W-30.

There are a lot of other issues to address before he gets on the bike. Like brake shoe delamination, just do a searchfor delamination and you will find plenty.

There's a little window on the right side...it might be very dirty and hard to see the level, but a flashlight will help.

If it was empty you would see a metal backing, it's probably too full, it's nearly impossible to tell if it's too full.

And the part that's dirty that makes it hard to see is the inside of the glass, btw.

A little engine degreaser on the window cleared mine up. You need the bike to be on its centerstand for several minutes before you get a "good" reading from the window though.

I use 20W-40, just takes a little searching.
