Thanks for all the help to the folks on this board. I rebuilt my carbs last week and set the float levels and it fired up immediately... turning over only about 2 times. I was so excited I had to take it for a ride... so I didn't get to check the valves yet because it did not have time to cool off. I changed the oil and filter, and rode it about 50 miles. Here's a couple of things the worked really well for me.
    1. I could not come up with a fuel tank that would work well for setting float levels, so I said the heck with it and used the motorcycle fuel tank. I took one of those cheap plastic saw horse's that you can get at Home Depot and threw it up on my work bench and wrapped a towel around the center section. The tank sits there very well but not level... so I filled it up with gas!!! All I needed was a 3 feet of 1/4" hose.
    2. I went digging threw my tool box and came up with the perfect tool for setting float levels. It's a tire thread depth gage which is marked in both fractional and millimeters. I cheched it against a ruler for accuracy, and it was very easy to make precise measurements and get the floats set exactly at 2mm for my 550. Maybe someone can post a picture. I got mine from the Michelin man for free!!!
Thanks for all the help so far!!!!!!!!
