While loading my XJ550 into a trailer this morning, I bottomed it out and tore off one of the small bolts on the bottom of the exhaust. A small piece of the bolt was still connected and I bent it back, however not all the way. There is a hole in it and some exhaust can get out, and probably water in. I was curious what you guys thought I shoud do. I was thinking of putting aluminium tape on it for now, but will that be enough?

    Thanks!

Are you talking about the little EGA port plugs on the very bottom of the pipes right where they go into the collector?

I "inherited" the very same situation on my '81, one of the little "bumps" the bolts go in was partially torn from its headpipe.

I repaired it with Milliput Epoxy putty; that was almost 4 years ago (and over 9000 miles) and it's still holding just fine.

I used the "standard grey" Milliput; this stuff is most commonly available in hobby shops although it has a lot of practical applications and actually works: http://www.milliput.com/home.htm

Great, thanks bigfitz. I was thinking of using epoxy but wasn't sure about it. Its a lot faster than taking off the pipes and welding it!

Milliput is not just any epoxy. Once cured, it is as HARD AS A ROCK and the exhaust temps don't seem to bother it.

Any other ideas that can be used to plug up 1/4 inch hole(s) in the collector box?
I live in the ass end of Scandinavia, and I don't think any reputable store has even heard of Milliput...

I ended up using JB Weld, cause I couldn't find Milipit, it is working just fine.

I've used JB Weld on my 4x4 exaust when I put a hole in the exhaust while crawling over some rocks. Sets up rock hard and I haven't had any issues with it since I made the repair, it should work well for you.
