Today I sold my beloved 1982 Yamaha XJ550 Maxim. It was my first motorcycle and I loved her very much. I purchased her last summer and fixed all her problems over the winter. The 550 taught me so much about motorcycles and mechanics in general. I had no automotive expertise whatsoever. I bought a Clymer's manual and dug in. I had a great/frustrating time with all my projects. I will go as far to say that the XJ made me a manlier man.

This spring I went crazy and bought a brand new Triumph Tiger 800XC, which is an unbelievable motorcycle. Seriously, it's amazing. I had convinced myself to keep both bikes, but I only ever rode the Tiger. So I made a video for Craigslist and ended up selling the XJ this afternoon. I definitely took a hit to the wallet considering the money I invested in the beast, but I feel it went to a good home.

Anyway, thanks to anybody who has given me advice on this site, it was much appreciated!

Here is a link to my sales video if you'd like to see it:

    So long...

What, you only had TWO bike for a short time?!?!?!?! You're sick! Hang around here, you'll end up with more XJ's. Look at EVERYONE'S lists. Only the sickliest among us only have one or two. The rest of us are good and healthy. :)

Haha, that's awesome. I live in the city of Chicago and I have limited space for vehicles. Trust me, this has been a sad day. I took the XJ out all day before the buyer stopped by. It was the equivalent to loading up and old pet into the station wagon to be put down. Terrible. All I know is that I'll have a hard time passing up buying a XJ900F if I ever see one.

Well, keep in mind that just cuz you sold the bike doesn't mean you have to leave. Stay here, stay involved, and your input and experience can be valuable to someone else who's just coming in.

Maybe you're right. I did love the fact that I could work on the XJ without proper training. All I know is that motorcycles are way too addictive, and I still love looking at old yamahas on craigslist.

Well put Hogfiddles and Skull education is not free you might have lost a little money on the bike but what you learned is way more valuable than mere money you now have knowledge that you will be able to apply to all sorts of mechanical things not just motorcycles Best of luck to you Hope you decide to hang around and share what you learned with others.

Yup, you'll be back.......congrats on both the sale and the Tiger...for those of us that remember the dark days of Triumph, it's good to see them producing really nice bikes again.

Yup. I had an old bike. Then I sold it for a newer one. Safe, reliable, etc. Sold it, bought another old bike.... They are too much fun to work on. Now that you have a new bike, you can buy that 900 and take your time restoring it! :)
