Available at V.I.P. Auto Parts Stores

    FRAM
    CH6003
    $4.99 US
    Made in China

This filter was the only one available in my area. FRAM is selling Mod. CH6003 for the XJ-Series.
Looks like an OEM Oil Filter.
Comes with 2 O-rings, that if you went to Yamaha and bought with a Yamaha Filter, would be over 20-Bucks!

The local Oreillys (formerly Hi/Lo) auto parts have carried that filter for a while now, also carrying the non-friction modified oils as well.

When I recently pulled the Maxim out of the garage, i was actually able to go to the new guys in town, Advance Auto Parts and get the filter, as well as original spec NGK spark plugs. The have Seafoam too.

In fact, the parts guy at AAP was able to look up the Maxim in his computers, which was a bit of a suprise.

I found the Fram filter at Wal-Mart the other day. With so any bikes being sold and continuing to be sold I suspect this trend will grow. Yamaha actually ran out of 2006 prodution bikes last year and started selling the 2007's early. Easier to do that since they were already in production. With gas prices going mile high again with no help from a gulf hurricane I suspect more bikes will be sold. Too big a market to leave it to the local chopper shop anymore. May help the used market even more.

Fram cartridge filters like ours are quite good actually -- it's really only their spin-on filters that I avoid like the plague - not called "the orange can of death" for nothing...

Wix also makes a filter for our bike - looks identical, but Wix is a good trusted name -- Wix part # 24934

And Purolator makes a very good one - the PremiumPlus filter #ML16803

Odd, I haven't seen them at any of the Wally-Marts in my neck of the woods. And yes, I've been looking.

Filter here cost $12 NZ with the two o-rings. The local (small town) garage stocks them! Not sure of the brand and number will check next time.

FRAM spin ons got a bad rep in New Zealand too. Good to hear their bike filters are good and cheap, will have to see if I can get them here.

Altus and Rick thanks for the filter part numbers, very useful info there :)

General stores (wal mart type things) here do not carry motorcycle stuff, gotta go to a bike shop. Yeah not even bike oil :(. This means we have to pay steelership prices :( .

Castrol synthetic motor cycle oil 4 litres is $58 NZ ($1 NZ = $0.74 US).
What does it cost over where you guys are?

They are not in the auto filter section. They are on a shelf where Wally World is now selling bike stuff. Helmets, gloves, foam backed glasses and such.

Yup, I found a filter (with the 2 o-rings) at Advance Auto Parts stores here in Omaha... I'd suspect that they have them in their other stores as well. Not sure if it was Fram though...

I did buy one of the $2 oil filters on my last partsnmore.com order (mainly to fill up the $35 minimum) but it did not come with the o-rings.

:D Boy am I glad I read this thread! just called the local Advanced Auto Parts, they have a filter for the ol' X, $4.42 I never would have called them on mine own, great information, thanks again all :D

By the way.....I'm going to look now (search), but a number of people are using the Castrol 20w-50 with no ill effects correct?

I have been running Castrol 20/50 for the last 20 years. No problems and excellent results on my bike engines. This includes two XJ750's.

I use dino. I've run it in:
70 VW Type 3- worked great, dropped oil temps about 10 degrees and didn't need to be changed every 1,500 miles. I could run it up to 3K before detecting any breakdown in viscosity.
79, 80, 82, 84 VW Rabbits- oil of choice, no coking problems and clean emissions. Nothing is better.
79, 85 VW Scirocco- clean motors everytime I dove into these. See above.
87 VW 16V Scirocco- this car loved Castrol 20-50. It somehow knew the difference and would get better gas milage with it.
81 650 Maxim- engine keeps ticking and was in perfect shape (save the fractured chain guide, but that is another story) when I split the case.
81 750 Seca- No problems here either.

I checked two stores yesterday on my way into work. One store did not have this shelf you described, and the motorcycle filters were stocked next to the automotive. The second did have said shelf, but neither store had the 6003 filters.

I use the Castrol 20W50 with no ill effects. Also, my local Auto Zone (yes, they carry bike parts!) ordered me up a couple of K&N filter elements for my Seca and gave me a discount because I ordered several. I got my battery from them as well.

I mentioned this in another thread; the local Kragen (Checker or Schuck's depending on where you're at) was able to get some of the Frams in for me. I ordered them about 11am and had them by 2:30.

yes i dredged up an ancient thread...

as an FYI you can still get CH6003 filters from Oreilly and Autozone for under $5.00.

Oreilly had it next day for me Autozone took 2 days. I bought a couple to keep on shelf...

Now just to find a cheap Fram type AIR FILTER for the XJs ...

I have used the Fram and the K&N and I prefer the K&N as it seems to keep the oil clean longer.
We have them@ Summit Racing Not too much more than the Fram.
The K&N seems to have more pleats.
