Hey guys, been looking around on the site for the past couple weeks and there is a lot of good info on here. Picked up an 81 xj750 for 500 on craigslist and am now in the process of getting it back on the road.

So far i've only taken it apart and started cleaning it since it looks like it went through a car wash with metal brushes. Got the carbs off and they were exactly what i expected, torn up. All of the jets were marred up by screwdrivers and one jet was spinning with the emulsion tube, ended up breaking it while somehow saving the emulsion tube. The good news though is that the diaphrams were 100% OK and passed the cluck test with a light polish on the piston bore. Basic cleaning on the rest of it. Will be doing my first float adjustment pretty soon.

The valves are about 50/50 in spec so I need to order a few shims before I can finish the carbs. I prefer the valve shim over bucket design compared to the other choices, I had an old toyota supra that had the same setup and it's a breeze to maintain.

The worst part about this bike is that there was no atari cluster and the headlight was not hooked up when I bought it so finding a speedometer and light that I like are proving to be very difficult since i cant see if what i want would bolt up or even work on the motorcycle. Does any body have some suggestions on what i could do with this? If you have some pics of what yours looks like with aftermarket equipment that would really help.

Also when I try and attach a picture it goes to a page that says "Internal Server Error".

Nice to see another XJ750 being refreshed!
There is an Atari on ebay for $130. For the cost of getting that and the OEM headlights it would probably be cheaper to get a circle headlight from a 650 and do your own gauges.

$130 for the atari is insane. Is the headlight for the 650 a direct replacement or will i have to use it's bracket also.

Another thing I was going to ask is what I should do about these carb jets. Since the stock ones are ruined i was going to order brand new ones. The bike has a supertrapp 4-into-1 and a single cone filter so should I go ahead and order #124 main and #41 idle jets or replace the stock ones to see if the bike will run good with them. Not sure what shimming the needle jet does or how to do it but ive heard of that also.

Here is what the bike looks like as of now, I know it's not pretty but it's mine.
Plus that headlight is for a Harley so it bolts up at the bottom, doesn't sit right on the bike so it's going in the parts bin.

that harley light isn't bad on there but the master cylinder behind it is going to get on your nerves sooner or later, so keep that in mind for the future, it will effect the headlight mounting
i have a digital speedo/tach on mine for right around 120$.
mine likes 128 mains and 41 pilots with a supertrapp and 6 plates with the stock airbox
