New member, first post. I just got an '82 XJ550J with 9800 miles and I am having a hard time with the idle. Don't know how long the bike sat, but has a full tank of fresh gas and runs great off idle. When cold it will not start without starting fluid. Once it starts it will idle with the choke on at 2500 then go to 4500 and stay there even with the ckoke off.If I remove a sync plug the idle will drop to about 1500 - 2000 for a few seconds then sputter, plug vacume leak and rpm's climb to 4500. I ran Seafoam through the carbs from a tee fitting in the fuel line and it helped some but still won't idle right. The carb holders have some surface cracks so I ordered a new set and will be changing them. Should I get a set of carb kits and do those when I have the carbs off to change the holders or just try the holders first?
    Thanks

My 550 used to do the same thing...doing a carb sync fixed it.

If your carbs will idle at 4500 RPM then it is safe to assume that your carbs are relatively clean. At least clean enough to feed enough fuel for a high idle. I agree with foogle and second the carb sync as the first thing to do.
You can however check the cracks in your carb holders to see if they are leaking.

I dug out my vaccume gauge, disabled the YICS, but the needle was bouncing to bad to get an accurate reading so I went with the average high. One and two were way off from each other, four was somewat close, and two was a mile off of three. It runs much betternow but the idle is still high for about ten seconds after releasing the throttle then drops to about 1100. The exhaust has a very strong smell like it is running rich, could the seafoam be causing that?
I plan on getting a color tune to set the idle mixture as the plugs have been removed and god knows what done to them. Thanks for the help. :lol

Btw- I WILL be getting damped gauges so I can sync the carbs better.
