timing chain

    anyone have a write up on Crankcase disassembly... after the top end is already off.

    I have loosened all 34 crankcase bolts, except i couldn't find #24 I'm going to check the manual for that. anyone have a better way of prying the 2 halves besides using the single pry point.

    I'm am breaking the motor down for a new timing chain. so a write up on timing chain would be even better. (1992 xj600 does not have a linking/master link in the timing chain)

    None of the bikes do. The "service solution" is to split the OLD CHAIN, not the cases. Then you snake in a new chain and re-rivet it. You really don't need to split the cases just for a timing chain.

    If you don't mind my asking, what could possibly be wrong with a timing chain with only 13K miles on it? One of my 550s is at 27K and the timing chain's like new.

    One of the links is broken and kind of looks like that. I don't know how it happened. I just bought that bike a few months ago and it has been in peices pretty much since i got it and when i did the valves i noticed that in the chain.

    The service manual i have says you have to split the cases. thats what i have been going by.

    The manual is probably telling you to split the cases in order to replace the cam chain with one that isn't efficiently open ended.

    What manual do you have? There are some that recommend different strategies than others. Clymer manuals are strictly by-the-book, whereas Haynes manuals encourage the user to make handy home made tools and such.

    It's a ton easier to snake in the new chain and re-rivet it with the handy dandy riveter you just bought.

    I have the haynes one, it never mentioned anything about re-riveting. I really wish i would of known that before i started tearing it down. I already have the motor off with the top end off and all the crankcase bolts loosened i just havnt pried it apart yet... :evil:

    How do i get the old rivet out of the chain without damaging it?
