I got my 1982 XJ650RJ last fall for $350 (was a steal!) as my first bike. I worked on it all winter and got her cleaned up and running great. I ended up putting some money into it doing upgrades like carb rebuild, valve shims, colortune, SS brake lines, seat re-covering, new tires / brake pads etc. The bike has a like over 27k miles on it now after I've ridden it all season.

Last week, I was presented with the opportunity to purchase a 1993 Suzuki Katana 750 with 18k miles for $1600 (might take less). The bike hasn't been dropped and I know the guy and he's taken pretty good care of it. I think it will need some general maintenance but nothing major. I haven't tested it's compression or anything yet. Cosmetically it's in very nice condition.

Putting any existing problems with the katana aside, would it make any sense to sell my seca to go with a newer/bigger bike? One of the main reasons is my wife would like to ride more and the 650/lack of any grab bars makes it pretty uncomfortable.

just trying to gauge if it's worth the hassle from other people's experience.

Keep it. You have already put the work into it. The Kantana might require the same ammount of work to make it road safe.
Let her ride the Seca and you ride the Kantana.

Well, you could always use and extra m/c. I mean, who couldn't?
I agree with mlew, if you can afford it and have the space.

....besides, if you get the Katana you won't be able to come back here and hang out with us really cool XJ'rs. (just kidding)
Like mlew said, the bike is an unkown and even though the P.O. is known to you there could be issues that he just isn't aware of. Unlike your XJ that you do know. Spend some money to improve the seating for S.W.M.B.O. and either find a factory grab bar or make one.
I think you'll be happier in the long run.
    Just sayin'.

thats going to be a little different than riding on the seca, better let her sit on it to see if she likes it up there. if she doesn't like it, get it for yourself :)
