AGM Replacement for 12A-A

    XJ Dudes and Chicks,

    The battery in my '82 550 Maxim hasn't made it quite two years according to the date stamp burned into it, and although it appears to be a cheap battery (it came with the bike when I bought it) I would like to replace it with an AGM battery for all the reasons one would want to do that.

    Is there an AGM replacement for the 12A-A that anyone has used on an XJ 550 with success? There is no direct cross reference from that battery model to an AGM in anything I can find.

    However I'd like to see if that's exactly true before I plop down the cash at the local farm and barn, or if I have to get one of these online.

    Try clicking the XJ4Ever link at the top of the webpage, and go to our resident parts guru's catalog pages. I ordered an AGM battery from him last year for my '81 550 Seca, and I love it. Fits like a charm, and the higher output cranks the starter significantly faster.

    for all XJ550 and XJ650 models:

    HCP1425 OEM original style STANDARD-PERFORMANCE WET BATTERY...

    HCP10455 OEM replacement style HI-PERFORMANCE WET BATTERY...

    HCP10401 Aftermarket HIGH-PERFORMANCE AGM BATTERY. This is an Absorbed Glass Mat style battery and is already filled with the acid-and-water mix and fully sealed, making it maintenance free for the life of the battery. NOTE: this battery is approximately 2mm taller than an original battery, and may require some slight modification to your original battery box for terminal attachment clearance on some models. Comes with a set of terminal installation bolts and nuts. 12 volts, 12 amp-hours, 180 CCA rating.

    I think all the AGM batteries are good quality--there doesn't seem to be a crappy option like there is for the conventional batteries.

    I had one for a while and I was really happy with it. But I found that the relatively weak electrical system on the bike has a tendency to ruin batteries (this could be my fault due to not enough maintenance on the wiring...but I don't think so), and it's easier to play with $35 conventional batteries than $75 AGM batteries, even if they're better (which they are).

    XS Performance makes an AGM battery for the 550's - it's part #61-2026 -- CBTX12AHL-BS

    I've got the similar battery in my 650 for the 2nd year now and it's been spectacular. You do need a proper charger for AGM batteries though - I got one that's also a maintainer, and all good so far.
