I am going this afternoon to pick up a 1979 Yamaha XS750 special (triple) for free. The guy is cleaning out his building and was goping to take it to the dump so I said I would take it. I haven't seen it yet but was told it was on the road last year. Other than normal things to check, I was wondering where to look if any parts are needed. I know Len has everything XJ but is there a particular place to get items for XS bikes? I have done some searching on the web but it seems like it might be limited. Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

http://www.mikesxs.net/ specializes primarily in the XS650 twins, but is a good source for parts for Yamahas from the years just before the XJs came out, early/mid-70s to about 1980.

Don't forget Yamaha themselves; although a bit pricey at times they still supply almost all of the "consummables" and "wear items" for the older bikes too. Here's a good fiche (and a decent place to deal with, too) http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/O ... ibrand=YAM

A quick check of the fiche tells us it shares things like valve shims and tach drive oil seals, etc., with the XJs.

If it's got a drum rear brake you know what to do first.

I picked it up on Friday and got some background information on it. The PO told me that it had gotten gas in the crankcase and he took it somewhere and they supposedly took care of the problem. When he got it back and took it out for a ride, after a while he said he stopped at a stop sign and looked down a oil was leaking out so he cut it off and he said he didn't try to start it up after that. When I got it home, after further looking into it. I think something come loose in the motor. There is a crack in the case of the motor down by the shifter side. It is very small almost hairline but oil does leak out of it. Should I invest time and money into this or should I part it out? Any thoughts????
