My name is Rik and I live in Casper, Wy. The motorcycle riding season lasts 4 or 5 months here if we are extremely lucky! This forum is great, I am a new owner of a 1982 750 maxim and I love it. I have only been here a short time and have learned much already. The bike has 22k original and is running pretty good now that I have adjusted the idle and such. Moved the two piece bars up also to a more comfortable riding position for me.

Future plans include cutting the seat foam down half of what it is and shortening the rear or the seat, cutting the frame in the back and shortening the rear fender. Removal of the grab bar. Replace the glass fuse holder with a blade style, repaint the tank and plastics... simple stuff for now to get more of a bobber look.

Other plans down the line include minimalizing the instrument cluster to probably just a speedo, replace the lights up front with a simple 7 inch round light. Not sure about the front air shocks yet, but they seem to be holding up fine.

Finally, here's pics. Any suggestions and or comments of course are welcome and appreciated!

    As I got her...

A few little changes, readjusted the bars for myself, deleted the mirror on the right side, fixed a few little carb and electrical issues. Took off the busted signal lights in the front and hopefully will get to taking the back ones off this weekend!

Yours was in about the same shape mine was.

I don't know about you, but I like the lines of that model a lot better with the sissy bar removed. And though I wanted to get rid of the square headlights when I first got the bike they've really grown on me . . . they're pretty unique on the road. I think a bobber with the square front would actually look pretty badass.

And search on here for rear brake delamination issues, you need to check this BEFORE you ride, no exceptions.

Edit: Count yourself lucky that you have your right side battery cover. Those things are really hard to find.

I'll say this again for you and anyone else reading - DON'T RIDE IT AGAIN UNTIL YOU FIX/INSPECT IT. It's been a fairly well documented problem around here and it has a fairly catastrophic outcome if it delaminates at speed.

Oh - when you pull the rear spindle, wheel, and disassemble the rear drum brake please wear some breathing protection. That thing is going to be full of fine asbestos dust.

I highly reccomend the 18" back wheel from the Seca... makes a *HUGE* improvement in both looks and handling on the Maxim, as does moving the forks up in the trees 1 to 1.25"... faster turning better looking (less "chopper"-ish)...

Nice lookin bike, thats the 1st metallic blue one ive seen, I dig it. Add a white stripe down the tank to finish it off!

Badfish do you have a picture of what that looks like?

And Rik, I'd also suggest poking around in the wiring a bit. If you're going to have a short it's good to find it while the bike is parked for brake inspection than when you're on the road later.

well here is a pic of the bikes I have,,, really like my maxim though. As you may be able to see I have removed the turn signals now, and deleted the god awful ugly mirrors off the bars. Found a really small mirror (you can see it under the clutch) made for a bicycle at walmart for $7. Does the trick and doesn't interfer with the lines on top of the bars...
