I live up on market in SF. I am new to bikes in general but I just got my XJ550 about 4 weeks ago from craigslist. She ran okay when I first to it but then I did something dumb and left petcock on prime for a while. So I am currently troubleshooting and have narrowed it down to a possible stuck float valves. Anyway, was wondering if any xj owners on this board live in sf. I've seen some xj's on the streets and perhaps some of you also lurk this board.

Looks like you scared them off Seca550. I'm afraid your all alone up there. Smokamoto is out in Sac if you get lonely. 2 hours from you and a heck of a lot more trees!

I'm in the San Jose area. Unfortunately I haven't learned anything yet about carbs and such, but at least I know I'm not completely alone in the Bay Area.

I live up in Sacramento. If you think you may have a stuck float. Setting the petcock to res and drian out the float bowls by loosening the screws at the base of each bowl. Not sure if it will work but you may have too much fuel in there for the spark plug to ignite. that may sound silly but if the spark plug it too wet i dont think it will fire.

    good luck

Thats dedication! Quite a trip, and at today's gas prices, you must have wanted that particular bike rather badly!

I live over in Hayward. I guess I might be the closest one so far. Though I'm not gonna be of any use as far as advice. I'm a total novice to bikes. Just got my '82 XJ650 about a month ago.

Welcome to you all the same, novice or not. Hayward, 580/980 run through there as I recall, neat "little" town. Give SF_550 a shout, he's just across the 92 (or is it 94?), I know he'd like to meet up with more XJ fans.

It's the 92. (San Mateo Bridge).

The only 94 I know of goes from Seattle to Wisconsin. (I'm a native Minnesota boy.)

I'll definitely try to meet up with Seca550_SF... I could use a fellow XJ owner to go through the learning process with.

Yeah, Seca550_SF, I keep screwing up his name. We did coffee the last time I passed through SF, nice guy. I hope he has bothered to check his email. PM me if you don't get a response, I can get in touch with him.

I just bought an XJ550 Seca the other day. Actually, got three at the same time but none are complete so I have a lot of work ahead of me. Joined here as part of my research. I'm in San Jose.

Nice country up there. I liked the commute but it was just cold all of the time. Wouldn't mind living out there however.

Quick, I've got friends up that way and pass through every quarter or so. I'd love to hit Kings National for a few hours. I miss the Lemoore swap meet, found a cool set of vintage Bates leathers there back in 90.

Will do. I've a very good friend who just got back out of the Gulf this past month who is stationed up there. His wife hails from Lemoore so its looking like his next tour will keep him there. I'll see if I can't get free (2 jobs, school, and a 2 year old don't leave much time) one of these days. I'll PM you if I get a shot. You might also shoot me your Email on PM.

How would we get in touch with you if one was inclined to take you up on this offer? I'm up in the greater Sacramento area on a quarterly basis. I'd love to take Hwy 49 during October, Apple Hill smells wonderfully of apples (small wonder why) and pine trees. With the chilled, crisp autum air rushing into your face, there are few pleasures like it.
Smokamoto and SF_550 are out that way.

I live in the eastbay area, yea I had the same problem with my XJ 650, drain the carbs, disassemble them, clean them, blast out the jets with an air hose, and you should be good to go.

Any of you heard the new morning radio show. Todd 'N Tyler. these guys are hilarious. I've been listening to them for 14 years now. they are based out of Omaha, NE. Irreverant humor, great interviews and great comedic guests. Not at all scripted like that stupid Bob & Tom show. They just ain't funny.

Check them out if you get a chance. Looks like they are on Xtra Sports 860? AM station?

This thread sort of died out, any of you folks who posted in 2006 still living in SF? Want to go for a ride or just wrench on our bikes?

Get in touch, I even have a good sized "yard" we can use (fits... 2 -3 bikes).

Hey SFers, I'm in lower haight. Picked up a '81 Maxim XJ 550 about a month back from the Bikeyard near Portreo Hill.

I'm less of a weekend rider and more of a commuter, but I like to do my own work. If anyone is interested then give me a holler.

I'm looking into painting my tank in the next month or so; I'll have extra materials and workspace. Looking around for good designs, and also I think I'll need an artist to do the pinstriping.

I'm also going to be installing some new carb boots over the next few weeks, and will probably make my own oil-based sync tool.

    Hello,

I am in the Bay Area and I just picked up my first bike. It is a 81 maxim 650 and I wanted to learn how to work on my bike and just learn more about the bike in general. Just wondering if there is anybody still out there that can share their knowledge.

Pleasanton is a very nice place, I hope you get lots of miles on that 550. Give Mt. Diablo a shot. Heck, out to the Sierra foothills and back is a nice days ride. I pass through on a quarterly basis, mayhap we'll meet some day.

This looks like an OLD thread, but I am in Santa Rosa! Just bought my first bike. '81 xj650 Maxim Midnight!
It was running, but now I am going to have to get into the carbs. Just won't stay running.
I know a bunch of riders that meet to just hang out on Thursday nights at the Starbucks on Santa Rosa Ave by Costco. They go riding together all the time too if anyone is interested.
