Can I Bypass the start button and kill switch with my own set up. How would I do this and has this been done before with what results? what would I need to buy to make something like this work. Thank you for any ideas or suggestions

    Load-up on Liability Insurance.

You might be heading to the Hospital; if you bypass the two features that keep the Bike from lurching forward out-of-control.

The worst case scenario is having the Bike start when you aren't prepared and sending SOMEBODY ELSE and you to the Hospital.

You can rewire the bike to any configuration you like, just understand how and why it is wired the way it is before you do, then make whatever changes you like. Start with studying the factory circuit and wiring diagrams, it's all there for you.

Why would you want to do this? What is this "setup" you speak of?

Ludacity, I think he wants to clean up the bars and remove the bulky control.....Nothing wrong with that, right?

Rick, come on now....everytime ANYONE pushes the kickstand up "We might be heading to the hospital". The battery does not have 7000 CCA, so chances of it plowing down some school kids or elderly is reallllllll low, especially with a clutch and a pair of brakes available.

smokey, you are going to need to understand why/how things operate before you try to upgrade or update. Using a H/D ignition switch ($15) and a push button ($6) on a separate plate would be cake, but that is for someone that Understands how things work. For the novice, you could burn the bike down(fuse will prevent this), leave yourself stranded (AAA will prevent this), or kill someone(staying in bed will prevent this)...well maybe not, lmao!!

    The answer is "yes."

Sounds like a reasonable question to anyone who DOESN'T ASSUME you're trying to disable some safety features. But when you get answers like the alarmist "You might be heading to the Hospital," or the rhetorical anwer-a-question-with-a-question "Why would you want to do this?" this thread feels like a less-than-ideal place to exchange ideas. And unless a guy has at least some fundamental electircal training, the suggestion of "studying the factory circuit and wiring diagrams" isn't that helpful either.

If you PM me, I'll give you a straight answer, which at some point will be specific to the exact change you're trying to facilitate.

    BTW, SW Michigan huh?

Oh one more thing. If anyone has bypassed the clutch safety switch. I plan on keeping the one for the kickstand but my factory hand clutch assembly is trashed and the replacement doesn't have a switch in it.

You have to have the clutch in to start the bike... Basically being in neutral. Otherwise the bike will fall over.

Sure, take a look here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=30354.html

Includes pictures of an original and both "styles" of available replacements.

Keep something in mind about the XJs sidestand: because of its location and rather "stubby" nature, it's almost impossible to see the thing when it's down, and hidden under your foot. Due to the geometry of the stand, if it's down and you roll into a left-hander, it can and WILL pry the rear wheel off the ground and drop you.

On the XJs, the safety circuit is quite useful.

I rewired my bike and it's set up basically like recoil's diagram. I don't have a kill switch (other than key) so only relocated start button to side of my battery box.
