I picked it up in Ottawa south for $300

Been stored for 11 years, but it looked clean enough.

So far I have cleaned the carbs, didn't rebuild them as they were actually fairly clean. I think they were drained before he parked it thankfully.

Changed the oil, both oil and air filter, have the front brakes off, but I'm looking for the right price to buy the pads. Have yet to check the back brakes

After I cleaned the carbs and changed the oil and filter, I set out to get it running. Other than the fact the throttle was used to adjust the idle. It started perfectly. Until the bottom of the exhaust joint blew out from rotten-ness. I'll probably look at welding a new plate on the bottom for the time being, since they run almost 200 just for that piece.

Anyways, that is my story so far. I hope to find/give all the help, answers possible while I get my XJ back on the road.

    :D

HEY!! Welcome, fellow Ottawan! Not too many of us on here...

Sounds like a nice score, but watch out for fuel leaks. If it sat for 11 years, there are all kinds of rubber bits and pieces in the petcock and carbs that could've dried out over that time.

And in about 9 seconds you're gonna be reminded to check the rear brake shoes for delamination and probably do a valve clearance check too... Fitz?

    Hehehehehe...

So far so good, petcock isn't leaking. It looks like he changed it at some point. It's not factory that's for sure.

The carb gaskets held up, but I do have 4 carb kits on stand by.

I guess I'll have to order a valve cover gasket next lol

Where do you order most of your parts from?

I found most of the stuff I needed at PartsNMore.com - they're actually located in Canada so it takes literally 3 days to get here.

Partsnmore is great, but I find they're often out of stock on items. Been waiting months for some FZ750 bowl gaskets... *sigh*

For parts, there's no better than XJ 4ever. There's an icon at the top of the screen you can click on. It's run by Len (Chacal on here) who is a gurgling fountain of valuable technical info on these bikes. There doesn't seem to be much he doesn't know... Reasonable shipping rates to Canada too, and though you're at the mercy of the customs folks, it's usually pretty quick too.

How much are your brake pads? Seems to me local bike shops have them for not much money and usually cheaper than buying online and paying shipping. I'm as cheap as they come and ended up getting pads here in town...

Welcome. I am a bit partial to the 650 Secas.

I would assume you have the red Canadian model?

From what I have been getting from local shops, I am looking at around 45 each set, so around $100 for the front.

Some of the US shops have them for $35 ish a kit, but if I add shipping I am back to 100 again. :(

I'm in Buffalo this weekend for 2 days though, so I may see what I can find down there. - Any one know any shops in the area?

Looks like Len (Chacal, XJ4ever) has em for $57 + shipping. Not too bad...

Shipping to Canada is $7.50 for orders over $100, so that's a good excuse to pick up a few other treats for you and your new bike!

Hahaha. Very true. Just check out his vendor forum.

The catalog alone took me a day to go through and pick out what I need. Lol

The only thing that worries me would be the hole 3 different brake pads that were on the bike

Everywhere I look it shows a different picture of the outline.

Something else you have to include on US shippings.

Don't forget the taxes (of course) AND DUTY. They nail ya on it, and customs is slow as hell. I find it can easilly take a month/month and a half to get stuff shipped up here..

Having said that, Len is THE man. He will help you out with any info you need, or answer any questions you have. Everything he sends you will be packed nicely for such a long trip!
