Fuel in crank case

    Ok I'm sure this has been addressed already but I just finished my carbs and got them back on the bike the bike runs pretty good but its dumping fuel not enough to flood out while running but the crankcase is now full and quite a bit of it is fuel. do I just need to adjust the floats?

    It's possible. Normally you would get a performance problem with carb issues. Bogging, black smoke, and ridability issues would be evident. Another cause could be a petcock that doesn't shut off when the engine isn't running or you have the lever in the "PRIme" position. If it is in the run location, remove the line from the tank without the engine running and the selection lever in the run position. There should be no fuel flowing. If there is the petcock requires attention.

    After locating and correcting the source of the contamination, don't forget to change the oil and filter.

    Incorrectly adjusted float levels or a sticky float AND a petcock issue need to be present to fill the crankcase with petrol.

    If you left the petcock on PRI after filling the carbs and the levels are wrong it would happen.

    If you had the petcock in the ON or RES position, you're levels are still wrong, but you also have a leaking petcock.

    Test the petcock with the hoses off the tank and in ON position. If gas runs out then you need to rebuild the valve. If not, then the valve is fine.

    Either way, gotta check those carbs and get the float problem fixed.

    Definitely do not run the engine with gas in the crankcase or you'll be looking for a new motor.

    After you fix the issue, as JF said, change the oil and filter. You may also need to change the air filter and plugs.

    Then after about 100 miles, change the oil and filter again.

    Is this true even if I only ran it for a few minutes before realizing the problem?

    Somebody on this site ran with about 3 quarts in - for a while, and didn't ruin the motor, but it's not something you'd want to do.

    The float pins and the "roll" of the float where they live need to be polished to "new" condition.

    The "seat" can be polished with a sharpened wood GOLF Tee, then polished more with compound and a Dremel.

    Is there any causes of fuel leaking into the crankcase that have nothing to do with a faulty petcock or valve float seals. The reason I ask is because I just got my bike back from my mechanic and the crank had about a litre of gas in it. Naturally I thought that the valve seats or float pin had become worn even though the bike had just recently had all four carbs rebuilt. In order to discover which one it was I turned the tank to prime, checked the fuel level, came back several hours later and checked it again but there was no change in any of the levels (which were actually 5-7mm too low). Then, I pulled the fuel supply line from the petcock, drained it, and came back the next day to find it still empty.

    So that tells me that the float valves are working as they should, and so is the petcock.

    My only explanation is that the mechanic let the bike fall over and had left it on prime.

    Any other ideas what might be the cause?

    Or it got left on PRI and has a float that sometimes sticks and sometimes doesn't. Certainly wouldn't be the first time.
